Tottenham Sign Savinho for £75 Million: A New Era Begins
Tottenham have doubled down on Roberto De Zerbi’s revolution by landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported initial £75 million, pushing their spending past the £300 million mark in a single window.
It is a staggering outlay for a club that flirted with disaster only a few months ago.
From City fringe to Spurs centrepiece
Savinho arrives in north London with a reputation that still feels like a promise rather than a completed product. At 22, he never nailed down a regular starting spot in two seasons at City, unable to turn flashes of talent into a permanent place in Pep Guardiola’s line-up.
Tottenham are betting that changes under De Zerbi.
"It's taken a while but I'm very happy to be here," Savinho said in the club’s announcement. "It's a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
"As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team."
The message is clear: this is a player who expects to be central, not peripheral.
De Zerbi’s rebuild, under pressure already
De Zerbi’s arrival late last season steadied a listing ship. His impact helped Spurs avoid relegation from the Premier League and spared them the humiliation of dropping into the second tier for the first time in 49 years.
The summer has been about making sure they never get that close again.
Yet the new era began with a jolt. Tottenham’s lavishly rebuilt squad were swept aside 3-0 by Brentford on the opening weekend, a reminder that spending and cohesion rarely arrive on the same day.
Savinho now joins a long list of new faces charged with changing the club’s direction: big-money signings Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke, plus free-transfer arrivals Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka. It is a squad being torn up and rewritten in real time.
De Zerbi made it clear why he wanted the Brazilian.
"Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity," the Italian said.
"We're very pleased to have him with us, and I'm looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team."
A talent still waiting to explode in England
Savinho’s path to Tottenham runs through the web of the City Football Group. He joined City from Troyes in 2024 for £30 million, both clubs sitting under the same ownership umbrella. His reputation soared during a blistering loan spell at Girona, where his direct running and fearless dribbling caught the eye across Europe.
That version of Savinho has rarely been seen in England.
In 84 appearances for City, he scored just seven goals as the club fell short of both Premier League and Champions League glory in Guardiola’s final two seasons. The raw tools are obvious; the end product, less so.
City stand to profit if it all clicks at Spurs. The deal includes up to £10 million in add-ons, potentially nudging the total fee towards £85 million.
And the business between the clubs may not be finished. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to swap Manchester for north London before the window closes next week, underlining the growing pipeline between the two sides.
For Tottenham, though, the question is simpler and far sharper: can a winger who never quite cracked City become the spark of a new era in N17, or will this record spend be remembered as a gamble that never caught fire?
