Tottenham's Unexpected Move for Mudryk: Loan Deal Details

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing one of the most unexpected moves of the window, closing in on a loan deal for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk with an option to buy for around £75 million.

The 25-year-old has not kicked a competitive ball for Chelsea since December 2024. His career was abruptly halted by a suspension following a positive doping test, and he has been frozen out at Stamford Bridge ever since. Now cleared to play after the charges were dropped, Mudryk is fit to return – just not in blue.

Enzo Maresca has decided there is no place for him in his Chelsea plans, leaving the Ukrainian firmly on the market. Tottenham have pounced.

A medical was completed on Tuesday morning, and the deal is expected to be announced before the transfer deadline. Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Fabrizio Romano said Mudryk is hours away from putting pen to paper.

“Yes, Mykhailo Mudryk will be a Tottenham player, he will sign his contract at Tottenham in the next two hours,” Romano said, confirming the structure of the move as a loan with a £75 million option to buy. Spurs will cover his salary and pay a loan fee as part of the agreement.

A change of plan on the left

This was not the left-sided signing Tottenham had been working towards all summer.

The club have been scouring the market for a natural option off the left flank. New arrival Savinho can operate there, but with Tottenham short of right-sided options, the Brazilian is expected to spend most of his time on the opposite wing.

Cody Gakpo was the original priority. Spurs pushed for the Dutchman, only for Liverpool to shut the door and keep him at Anfield. Tottenham then pivoted to Iliman Ndiaye, exploring a complex scenario that would have seen the Senegal international arrive and Richarlison return to Everton.

That plan collapsed. No agreement could be reached between Richarlison and Everton on personal terms, and the entire chain fell apart.

That’s when Mudryk’s name suddenly exploded into the frame on Monday evening. From nowhere, he became the leading candidate, and within 24 hours, Tottenham had moved to the brink of securing him.

Romano described Mudryk as the “easiest option” for Spurs once their other pursuits stalled, with Chelsea prepared to let him go and the structure of a loan with option to buy suiting all parties.

What comes next for Mudryk and Spurs

Mudryk now has a route back to elite football, and Tottenham gain a winger whose raw pace and direct running once made him one of Europe’s most talked-about prospects.

He could make his Spurs debut as early as Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest. Given he has not played for well over a year, though, the expectation is that Tottenham will manage his minutes carefully rather than throw him straight into the intensity of a full Premier League start.

For a player whose Chelsea career never truly ignited, this move offers something close to a reset. For Spurs, it’s a high-stakes, high-upside gamble on a winger with a point to prove and a season that still feels wide open.
