Tottenham's Future: De Zerbi Era and Savio's £85m Impact
Tottenham have been warned, cajoled and mocked since that shuddering escape on the final day of last season. Gordon Strachan is convinced they won’t be flirting with the drop again – and he’s pinning a big part of that belief on one thing: fear.

Strachan sees shades of Sir Alex in De Zerbi
Spurs staggered through 2025/26, a year removed from lifting the Europa League, and somehow avoided relegation to the Championship on the final day. It was a collapse that shredded their European status and their reputation in equal measure.
Strachan, speaking to Betway, does not see a repeat under Roberto De Zerbi.
“I can’t see Spurs doing that again, I really can’t,” he said. “Not after spending that type of money, and not with the manager they’ve got, who's permanently angry – which is good.”
Then came the comparison that will raise eyebrows in both north London and Manchester.
“It’s like Sir Alex, he was permanently angry, as long as he's [Roberto De Zerbi] got that drive to scare people into winning games of football and not getting beat.
“When I played with Sir Alex, it was not the fact that you had to win, you were just so scared of getting beat. So I think that’s what De Zerbi does to these teams a little bit.”
For Strachan, the edge, the snarl, the refusal to tolerate standards slipping – that is what hauls clubs away from crisis. Tottenham are banking on it.
Savio arrives as £85m jolt of electricity
If De Zerbi is the hard edge, Savio is the spark.
Tottenham’s announcement of the Brazilian’s arrival from Manchester City – an initial £75 million fee plus £10m in add-ons – detonated across the club’s social media channels. After a year defined by anxiety, Spurs fans finally had something to celebrate.
“Welcome lad we’ve been waiting for you. Time to build a legacy here in Spurs and the Premier League,” wrote one supporter.
Another went bigger: “From shining at Girona to learning under Pep, and now cooked up by Roberto De Zerbi? Absolute masterclass signing. Savio is going to transform this attack entirely. Premier League isn’t ready for this flair!”
The expectation is clear. This isn’t a squad player. This is a centrepiece.
Registered in time – and straight into the De Zerbi machine
Tottenham moved quickly to ensure Savio can start repaying that fee. The club had until midday to register new signings for the Carabao Cup tie against Charlton Athletic on Wednesday. The paperwork is done. Savio is eligible.
He can play. De Zerbi can unleash him.
Behind the scenes, the work continues. Spurs remain in talks with Manchester City over Marmoush, though no agreement has been reached. Time is ticking on that front, but Savio is through the door and ready.
Lange: “On our radar for a while”
Sporting director Johan Lange made no attempt to play down the scale of the signing.
“Savio is someone who has been on our radar for a while and I’m delighted that he is now a Tottenham Hotspur player,” he said.
“He has already shown his quality at the highest level, and we believe his ability, style and mentality will be a great fit for the squad we are building here.
“I know he will excite our supporters every time he gets on the ball and I’m looking forward to watching his development under Roberto’s coaching.”
There is a clear thread here: profile, personality, and a manager who demands both.
Savio: “It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here”
The player himself cut an eager, relieved figure as the move finally went through.
“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” Savio said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
“As soon as I spoke to the Head Coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level, and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”
This is not a winger arriving to hide in the shadows. He has chosen the pressure, the scrutiny and the demand to deliver now.
Back to ‘Savio’ and into Romero’s old shirt
The details tell their own story. Savinho at City, Savio at Girona, Savio again at Spurs.
The 22-year-old has reclaimed his old moniker and will wear the No 17 shirt in north London, the number recently vacated by Cristian Romero, who left for Atletico Madrid just 10 days ago.
Name changed, number changed, club changed. Role? Very clear.
Savio steps into a side that desperately needs invention and conviction in wide areas, and he does so under a coach who has already publicly challenged him to be decisive.
De Zerbi: “Energy, imagination and quality”
De Zerbi has already nailed down exactly what he expects.
“Sávio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions,” the Tottenham manager said.
“He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity. We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”
Energy. Imagination. Courage. Creativity. Personality. Those are not luxuries for a side that almost fell through the trapdoor last season. They are necessities.
Strachan believes fear of failure will drive this Tottenham squad. De Zerbi believes Savio’s talent can tilt games. The supporters believe they finally have a forward who can light up the place.
Now comes the only verdict that matters: what Savio and this “permanently angry” Spurs side do when the whistle blows.
