Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos Set for Manchester United Debuts

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are set to step properly into the Manchester United spotlight this weekend, with both expected to make their competitive debuts against Hull City.

Santos, the £50million summer arrival from Chelsea, has barely missed a beat since walking through the door. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies, a constant presence in Michael Carrick’s evolving midfield. That workload points strongly towards a starting role on Saturday afternoon, anchoring the centre of the pitch from the first whistle.

Tielemans’ path has been different but no less significant. The Belgian midfielder arrived later after a mandatory three-week break following the World Cup, where he helped Belgium reach the quarter-finals. Any rust has gone. He completed the full 90 minutes in the final warm-up game against AC Milan in Poland, a 4-2 defeat that still offered Carrick plenty of clues about his preferred structure.

Midfield Structure

Carrick, now heading into his first full campaign as permanent head coach, may not overcomplicate things. He could stick with the same midfield trio that started against Milan, with Tielemans and Santos behind captain Bruno Fernandes, who is expected to operate in his favoured No10 role. That shape gives United control, legs and a clear creative hub.

Defensive Choices

At the back, the picture is less settled. Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness has opened the door for youth. Ayden Heaven is pushing hard and could be trusted to start alongside Harry Maguire, who faces one of his former clubs in Hull. Leny Yoro is also in the frame, but Heaven’s momentum and Martinez’s condition may tilt the decision.

Senne Lammens is in line to start in goal, while Luke Shaw should lock down the left-back spot. On the opposite flank, Carrick has a straight call to make: Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui. Both bring energy and attacking intent; only one gets the nod.

Forward Dynamics

Further forward, Patrick Dorgu’s rise has complicated the picture in a good way. Either side of a cruel injury suffered in January against Arsenal, he has been reshaped into a left-winger and has taken to the role with real purpose. That reinvention clashes directly with the natural territory of Matheus Cunha, who does his sharpest work cutting in from that same left side.

The knock-on effect runs through the forward line. With Benjamin Sesko not yet ready to start after a three-month lay-off, Cunha is expected to fill in again as the central striker. That adjustment pushes Bryan Mbeumo back out to the right, restoring a more familiar balance to the front three.

Carrick has options, dilemmas and a new-look core. Hull City will provide the first serious test of whether this reshaped United can turn promise into points.
