Southampton Reject Aston Villa Bid for Harwood-Bellis Amid Konsa Exit
Aston Villa have seen an opening move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis turned away, with Southampton rejecting a bid worth around £18m plus add-ons for the defender.
Unai Emery’s side are bracing for change at the back. Ezri Konsa, a mainstay of Villa’s rise under the Spaniard, is set to join Arsenal in a deal expected to top £50m. Villa have moved quickly to identify a replacement. Southampton have responded just as firmly.
The south coast club are understood to want in the region of £25m for Harwood-Bellis, a player they regard as central to their plans after a chaotic end to last season. They finished fourth in the Championship before the Spygate scandal cut short their play-off campaign, and losing their defensive leader now would bite hard.
Harwood-Bellis arrived at St Mary’s in 2023, initially on loan, and has grown into a commanding presence. His progress was underlined by an England debut in 2024, when he earned his first cap in a Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland.
His path to this point has not been straightforward. He came through Manchester City’s academy, highly rated but unable to break into a first team stacked with elite defenders. Southampton gave him the platform; now Premier League clubs are circling.
For Villa, the move comes in the middle of a summer of sharp transition. Since lifting the Europa League in May, they have sanctioned the exits of several key figures: Youri Tielemans has gone to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain.
The speculation has not stopped there. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez, a cornerstone of Emery’s side, and Premier League-era club record scorer Ollie Watkins have both been linked with moves away, raising the stakes on every incoming deal.
Villa have already started reshaping the squad. This week they brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, adding to earlier summer arrivals Joao Gomes from Wolves in midfield and Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in attack.
The spine is being rebuilt. The question now is whether Villa will return with a second, stronger offer for Harwood-Bellis – and how high Southampton will force them to climb.
