Thibaut Courtois on Rodri's Decision to Join Barcelona

Thibaut Courtois has never been one to hide behind clichés, and he didn’t start now.

Asked about Rodri’s decision to turn down Real Madrid and join Barcelona instead, the 34-year-old goalkeeper delivered his verdict with the kind of cold edge that tends to linger in a dressing room.

“Every player chooses where they want to be. If he didn't want to be with us, well, that's a pity... for him,” Courtois said after Real Madrid’s dramatic win over Espanyol. “In the end, he's a great player, but he made his choice, and that's it.”

No nostalgia. No olive branch. Just a line drawn.

The backdrop only added to the intrigue. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner was reportedly staying at the same hotel as the Real Madrid squad in Catalonia on the eve of their clash with Espanyol, a detail that inevitably fuelled talk of what might have been.

Courtois brushed that aside with a shrug.

“He stays in our hotel? Well, the hotel is big, there will be many people there,” he added, cutting off any attempt to turn coincidence into conspiracy.

Mourinho lifts the lid on failed move

If Courtois framed Rodri’s choice as a missed opportunity for the player, Jose Mourinho went a step further and explained why the transfer collapsed from Madrid’s side.

The new Real Madrid boss confirmed the club had pushed hard, but said the midfielder’s hesitation ultimately killed the deal.

“I spoke to him a couple of times and Real Madrid made him a very good offer,” Mourinho revealed. “I think there is a very good relationship with City. Without negotiating with City, the club made contact with Rodri, they made him a major offer. Rodri had doubts, he hesitated and Rodri’s doubts created doubts for me.”

That was the turning point. Once Mourinho sensed uncertainty, the door began to close.

For him, Real Madrid’s badge demands conviction from the first phone call, not a drawn-out courtship. If a player hesitates, the club moves on.

“I am not lacking Rodri”

Talk of Madrid missing out on a cornerstone for their midfield rebuild has swirled all summer. Mourinho is having none of it.

“I am not lacking Rodri,” he stated, the answer as sharp as Courtois’ earlier jab. “We are not lacking players. I’m not saying there won’t be any more signings because the market is open, but if you ask me directly if it’s closed for me… yes. It is closed. I really like the squad.”

The message is clear. Madrid will not beg, and they will not wait.

Rodri chose Barcelona. Courtois and Mourinho chose to move on. The season will decide who was right.
