St. Pauli Signs Dimitar Mitov as New No.1 Goalkeeper
St. Pauli have moved decisively to fill their goalkeeping void, confirming on Thursday morning the signing of Aberdeen’s Dimitar Mitov.
The Bulgarian international arrives from the Scottish Premiership side for a reported fee of €400,000, according to Transfermarkt, and is expected to walk straight into the role of first-choice goalkeeper.
From Vasilj’s exit to a new anchor
Relegation to the 2. Bundesliga triggered a changing of the guard in Hamburg’s goal. Long-serving number one Nikola Vasilj chose a new adventure in the Saudi Pro League with newcomers Al-Diriyah after his contract ran down, leaving St. Pauli without their established last line of defence.
Ben Voll started between the posts in the opening 2. Bundesliga fixture, a draw against Greuther Fürth, but that always felt like a stopgap. With Mitov’s arrival, the hierarchy is clear: the former Aberdeen man is set to move ahead of the ex-Köln keeper in the pecking order.
A keeper forged in Scotland
Mitov’s route to the Millerntor has not been straightforward. The 29-year-old built his reputation in Britain with Cambridge United before spells at St. Johnstone FC and Aberdeen, where he truly broke through.
According to Kicker, he has signed a three-year deal with St. Pauli, a statement of faith in a player who became Aberdeen’s starting goalkeeper in each of his two seasons at Pittodrie.
His first campaign in Scotland was interrupted by a hamstring injury that sidelined him for months. When he returned, he did more than just regain his place. He helped drive Aberdeen to a sensational 2024/25 season: they opened the Premiership with 12 wins and a draw and capped the campaign with their first Scottish Cup triumph since 1990.
Mitov stood at the heart of that run. In the final against Celtic, he saved two penalties, etching his name into Aberdeen folklore. Across his final season, he racked up 42 appearances, underlining his durability and importance.
Rapp’s new cornerstone
St. Pauli head coach Marcel Rapp did not hide his enthusiasm for the club’s new signing, highlighting the attributes that persuaded the club to move quickly for him.
“Dimitar (Mitov) has very good qualities on the line and can solve even difficult situations due to his dynamism and explosiveness. At the same time, he actively defends the space and conveys a lot of peace and security. We look forward to working with him and integrating him into our processes,” Rapp said.
It is exactly the blend St. Pauli need in a season that demands stability at the back: sharp reactions, aggressive positioning, and a calming presence behind a defence still adjusting to life in the second tier.
Mitov’s mission in Hamburg
For Mitov, this is a new league, a new culture, and a new kind of pressure. The 15-time Bulgarian international sounded ready for all of it.
“I am very much looking forward to FC St. Pauli and the new league. The discussions with those responsible convinced me of a cooperation. I want to quickly integrate with the team, contribute my experience, and be successful together with the entire team to achieve the goals of the club,” he said in his first interview as a St. Pauli player.
