St Nicks stared at a win-or-bust evening in Macroom and never blinked.
Needing victory to squeeze into the knockout stages, the city side dug deep and then some, overturning an early deficit to see off Kilmacabea and book a quarter-final date with Kinsale.
Kilmacabea arrived with a simpler equation. A draw would do. They played like it in the opening quarter, calm and composed, clipping scores while St Nicks chased shadows.
Eamon Shanahan and Ian Jennings led the way, Shanahan’s dead-ball accuracy and Jennings’ movement pulling the Nicks defence around. After 15 minutes, Kilmacabea were 0-5 to 0-2 in front and looked in control.
Then Robert Downey detonated the game.
The Cork hurler, a rock in defence on the hurling field, strode forward and unleashed a thunderous shot to the net on 18 minutes. It was a statement as much as a score, a rocket that ripped into the top corner and into Kilmacabea’s early rhythm.
The goal flipped the mood. St Nicks, suddenly energised, began to punch holes. On 27 minutes, the surge brought a second hammer blow. Conor McCarthy, alert and clinical, finished from close range to push Nicks into a strong position.
Kilmacabea needed a response and got one from Jennings. He carved out a superb individual goal before the break, dragging his side back level and silencing the growing Nicks roar. At half time it was finely poised: St Nicks 2-3 Kilmacabea 1-6.
Second Half
The second half turned into a tense arm-wrestle.
Scores were traded, space was tight, and every free felt loaded with consequence. Shanahan kept Kilmacabea alive, again and again, his frees and points from play keeping the scoreboard moving. For Nicks, James O’Sullivan and McCarthy answered in kind, steadying the city side when the game threatened to fray.
Midway through the half, nothing could separate them. Locked at 2-6 to 1-9, with knockout hopes hanging by a thread for both, Macroom felt small and the stakes very big.
Something had to give. St Nicks found the extra gear.
O’Sullivan, increasingly influential, delivered the key moment with a lovely two-point score that nudged Nicks back in front. It felt like a turning of the tide. Kilmacabea, who had been able to lean on Shanahan all evening, suddenly found themselves chasing.
O’Sullivan tagged on another point. Then Dave Dunlea arrived with a fisted score, stretching the gap to four and sending a surge of belief through the Nicks support.
Kilmacabea threw what they had left at it. Former Cork footballer Damien Gore came off the bench in the closing stages, a clear signal that they were going all in. Shanahan clipped over yet another point to set up a nervy finish and keep the outcome in doubt right to the final whistle.
But St Nicks held their line. They managed the final minutes with the composure of a team that understood exactly what was at stake and refused to let it slip.
When the whistle went, the equation was simple. Kilmacabea were out. St Nicks were through, and Kinsale now stand between them and a deeper run in this championship.
