St Johnstone Sign Swansea Youngster Joel Cotterill on Long-Term Deal
St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield with the capture of highly rated Swansea City youngster Joel Cotterill on a long-term deal.
The 21-year-old arrives in Perth for an undisclosed fee and has signed a contract running until the summer of 2027, a clear signal that St Johnstone see him as a key part of their rebuild rather than a short-term fix.
Swansea schooling, Scottish experience
Cotterill comes through the famed Swansea academy, a system built on possession football and technical midfielders. He made his senior debut for the Welsh club in 2022 before being sent out to learn the hard yards in the English lower leagues with loan spells at Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.
The real audition for this move, though, came north of the border. Cotterill spent the second half of last season on loan at Dundee, where he featured 11 times in the Premiership and found the net once. Those months gave him a first-hand taste of the intensity of Scottish top-flight football and the demands of its relentless schedule.
A midfielder who wants the ball
Speaking to the club’s media after sealing the switch, Cotterill made it clear why St Johnstone’s style appealed.
“I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club,” he said. He then tuned in to watch his new team face Dundee on Wednesday night and liked what he saw. “I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play.”
His footballing identity has been shaped by his Swansea upbringing.
“Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball.”
That blend of composure and forward thrust is exactly what St Johnstone have been searching for in the middle of the park.
Ready for the grind
Cotterill knows this move is no gentle introduction. His previous loans have already pushed him out of his comfort zone, and he believes that grounding will serve him well in Perth.
“I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership,” he said.
“It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge.”
St Johnstone have now handed him the platform and the contract length to grow. The next step is his: turn that promise and possession pedigree into consistent Premiership impact.
