Southend United Signs Ryan Battrum on Loan to Boost Promotion Bid
Southend United have moved to strengthen their promotion push with the loan signing of West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a one-month deal.
The 21-year-old, who is equally comfortable stepping into midfield, is no stranger to Roots Hall. He faced Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July and has had the club on his radar since.
"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."
For a side already flying under Kieron Dyer, it’s a move that sharpens an area of strength rather than patches a weakness. Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, with just one defeat from their opening seven games and a growing sense of momentum around the club.
Dyer wants that momentum fuelled by competition.
"It's always good to have two players for every position," he said. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."
Battrum’s ability to step inside and operate as an auxiliary midfielder fits neatly with Dyer’s aggressive, front-foot style. It also sends a clear message to the squad: standards will not drop, even with a solid start on the board.
There will be no gentle bedding-in period. Battrum is available immediately and could make his debut in Tuesday night’s home clash with Tamworth, under the lights and in front of those crowds he has already been watching from afar.
