Shrewsbury Town Sign Leicester's Michael Golding on Loan

Shrewsbury Town have moved to plug their midfield gap by bringing in Leicester City youngster Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old arrives with a Premier League education behind him. Raised in Chelsea’s academy, Golding came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and made his senior debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie in January 2024, his only first-team appearance for the Blues.

Leicester pounced that summer, paying around £4m and tying him down on what the club described as a long-term contract. Golding had to wait for his chance, but finally made his Foxes debut at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, a grim period for City as they slipped out of the Premier League.

Now he drops into League One with a point to prove and a sizeable role to play. He becomes Shrewsbury’s ninth signing of the window and is expected to help cover the loss of Jack Price, sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury.

Head coach Gavin Cowan made no attempt to hide his delight at getting the deal done.

“We're really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” he told BBC Radio Shropshire. “He's been on our radar for a while. He's a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”

Cowan gets a technically gifted midfielder eager for regular football; Golding gets the stage he has been waiting for. Both sides know this needs to work.

Shrewsbury may not be finished yet either. BBC Radio Shropshire report the club are close to agreeing a loan move for Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown.

The forward, named Burnley’s academy player of the year last season, signed a two-year contract extension in the summer. Any deal would see him reunite, indirectly at least, with a familiar figure to Shrewsbury fans: former Town chief executive Matt Williams, now chief operating officer at Burnley.

Golding through the door, McMahon-Brown potentially next. Shrewsbury’s squad is being reshaped at speed – and the stakes for their season are rising just as quickly.
