Sheffield United Sign Jordan Ayew to Boost Experience
Sheffield United have turned to proven experience in their battle for points, bringing in former Crystal Palace and Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew on a deal until the end of the season.
The 34-year-old Ghana international arrives as a free agent after leaving Leicester at the end of last season, when the Foxes dropped into League One. His contract expired in the aftermath of that relegation, leaving a player with more than a decade in English football suddenly on the market.
Chris Wilder has moved quickly.
"We're talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game," the Blades boss told the club’s website. He did not need to oversell it. Ayew’s career does most of the talking.
Aston Villa brought him to England from Lorient in 2015. Since then, Ayew has lived the full grind of English football, splitting the last 11 years between the Premier League and the Championship with Villa, Swansea, Crystal Palace and Leicester. He has seen relegation scraps, survival pushes, mid-table drifts – the lot.
On the international stage, his résumé is just as weighty. Ayew has 124 caps for Ghana and was still central enough to his country’s plans that, as Wilder pointed out, "only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup." That kind of line carries weight in any dressing room.
For Sheffield United, the appeal is obvious. They are getting a forward who has operated across the front line throughout his career. Left, right, through the middle – Ayew has done all three, and Wilder made it clear that this versatility is part of the attraction, saying the Ghanaian "has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options."
The manager also nodded to Ayew’s resilience. The forward "did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances," Wilder said, a clear reference to Leicester’s troubled campaign. That experience of trying to find form in a struggling side is exactly the sort of steel United hope to tap into.
Ayew arrives with pedigree, miles on the clock and something still to prove. For a club fighting to change the direction of their season, that combination is exactly why you make a signing like this in September – because the next few months will show whether experience can drag them where they need to go.
