Santiago Bueno Loaned to Club America: Wolves Defender's New Chapter

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves stint has been put on pause – and restarted 5,000 miles away in Mexico City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have sent the Uruguay centre-back on loan to Club America until the end of the season, with the Liga MX leaders securing an option to buy as part of the deal.

The move closes a short, turbulent chapter for the 27-year-old. Signed from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, Bueno arrived as a long-term piece of Wolves’ back line. He went on to rack up 70 Premier League appearances across three seasons, becoming a regular presence in defence.

There were flashes of genuine connection with the Wolves support. Last September he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham, a key moment in a campaign that ultimately soured. Bueno played 29 league games last term, but could not prevent Wolves slipping out of the Premier League after eight consecutive years in the top flight.

Relegation reshaped everything. As the club retooled for life in the Championship, competition for places at the back intensified. When the 25-man squad was finalised for the new season, Bueno found himself on the wrong side of the numbers and did not feature at all.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told Wolves’ website. The club knew there were still open markets after their own deadline, and when the squad limit bit, Bueno was the one squeezed out. “When we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out,” Jackson said.

Club America, sitting top of the Liga MX table, have stepped in with a solution that suits all parties. Bueno gets minutes and a fresh stage at one of the biggest clubs in the Americas. Wolves gain flexibility and the possibility of a permanent sale if the Mexican giants trigger their option.

For a defender who has already navigated Spain, England and the Premier League spotlight, Mexico offers a different kind of pressure. If he thrives in the heat of the Azteca, this loan may not just revive his season – it could redefine the next phase of his career.
