Sam Edozie's Transfer Request to Southampton

Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request to Southampton, with the winger going public over his frustration just hours before Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old took to Instagram to confirm he has formally asked to leave, revealing he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and believes the club’s stance is blocking his exit.

“Last summer I had the opportunity to move elsewhere, but the club did not allow me to leave,” Edozie wrote. “The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”

This time, he has chosen to force the issue.

Edozie claimed Southampton have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee”, a sell-on demand he says has made potential moves “extremely difficult to pursue”. The club have not responded publicly, with BBC Sport confirming they have approached Southampton for comment.

The winger joined Southampton from Manchester City in September 2022, seen then as a high-upside signing for the future. Since arriving on the south coast he has made 29 starts and a further 57 appearances from the bench, flashes of promise never quite turning into a sustained run.

Game time, he says, sits at the heart of the dispute.

He admitted he was not getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and stressed the urgency he feels at this stage of his career. “A football career is short, and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player,” he said.

Edozie is currently out on loan at Belgian side Anderlecht for the 2024-2025 season, a move designed to give him the regular football he craves. His statement, though, makes clear he sees his long-term future away from St Mary’s and wants a permanent solution rather than another temporary fix.

With the deadline looming and the player’s position now public, the next move belongs to Southampton.
