Salah’s Transfer to Trabzonspor: A Historic Move in Turkish Football

Fatih Terim has seen just about everything in football. Titles, European nights, World Cups. Yet even he paused in admiration when Mohamed Salah chose Trabzon over the billions of the Gulf.

The iconic coach has called Salah’s arrival at Trabzonspor “one of the most important transfers in the history of the Turkish league,” a statement that underlines just how seismic this deal feels inside the country.

The timing could not be more charged. Papara Park is bracing for a storm in the sixth round of the Trendyol Super League, as Trabzonspor host old rivals Galatasaray in a clash that leaves no room for half measures.

Trabzonspor sit ninth on 7 points, still searching for stability and a clear identity in front of their own fans. Galatasaray travel as league leaders, with 13 points from a possible 15 and the chance to carve out an early gap at the top.

Into that backdrop walks Salah.

Terim, speaking to Turkish outlet 61saat, underlined just how unlikely this move looked on paper. “We are talking about a player who has been at the highest level for years with Liverpool, and has won everything. The Europa League, the Champions League, and Club World Cups. He is a player who is indispensable,” he said.

Then came the scale of the competition. “Any club in the world would wish to sign him,” Terim added. “Clubs from the Emirates and Saudi Arabia are ready to pay enormous sums for him, not to mention the giants of the Spanish, Italian and English leagues. But in the end he chose Trabzonspor, and this in itself is a great achievement.”

That choice – turning his back on the huge money of Saudi Arabia and the UAE to step into the cauldron of the Black Sea – has electrified the Turkish game. It has also earned rare, unfiltered praise from a man nicknamed “The Emperor”.

Terim reserved special credit for the club hierarchy. “President Ertuğrul Doğan and his administration deserve every appreciation and congratulation. Bringing in a player of this world-class value is not an easy matter at all, as he is able to go anywhere he wants. What happened is a momentous thing and deserves praise.”

The words land at a moment when Salah is already justifying every superlative. His start in the Trendyol Super League has been explosive: 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 matches, numbers that have instantly installed him as the league’s standout star.

Now comes the real test. A fired-up Papara Park, a surging Galatasaray, and a global icon who turned down a fortune to light up Turkish football. How far can this gamble push Trabzonspor – and how much will it reshape the balance of power at the top of the league?
