Ronaldo’s Title Hopes Dashed by Bento’s Own Goal

The stage was set for a coronation. Instead, Al-Nassr walked away stunned, and Cristiano Ronaldo was left staring into space from the bench.

Deep into stoppage time in Riyadh, with Al-Nassr clinging to a 1-0 lead over bitter rivals Al Hilal and seconds away from their first Saudi Pro League crown in seven years, disaster struck. Goalkeeper Bento rose to claim a routine overhead effort, misjudged the catch, and watched in horror as the ball slipped through his grasp and over the line.

An own goal. A title delayed. A stadium silenced.

The Riyadh club had been on the brink of an 11th league championship, one that would have marked Ronaldo’s first domestic trophy since he arrived in January 2023 amid global fanfare. The 41-year-old, now the captain and beating heart of Al-Nassr, could only sit helplessly on the bench as the Brazilian’s error turned victory into a 1-1 draw.

Before Kick-off

The contrast could not have been sharper. Before kick-off, optimism dripped from every corner of the ground. Home fans streamed into the stands to find free Al-Nassr shirts on their seats, turning the arena into a sea of yellow. This was supposed to be a night of celebration, a statement win over second-placed Al Hilal to seal the title in front of their own.

For long stretches, it followed the script. Al-Nassr led, controlled, and managed the tension of a derby with everything on the line. Al Hilal, last season’s champions, chased and probed, but time ran away from them. The clock moved past 90. The title edge felt real, tangible.

Then the ball looped into Bento’s area. Then the fumble. Then the collective gasp.

In a single, cruel moment, the narrative flipped. Instead of Ronaldo lifting his first Saudi Pro League trophy, cameras found him wearing the look of a man who has seen enough football to know how quickly it can turn. Frustration etched across his face, he watched Al Hilal’s players celebrate a point that keeps the race mathematically alive.

Current Standings

The table still favours Al-Nassr. They sit top with 83 points from 33 games. Al Hilal trail on 78, but crucially have played one match fewer, on 32. The margin remains, but the comfort has gone.

Al-Nassr’s last league title dates back to 2019. Since then, Al Hilal have continued to collect honours, including the 2024 league crown that reinforced their status as the country’s dominant force. This season was meant to be the reset, the year Ronaldo’s presence pushed Al-Nassr back to the summit.

It still can be. But Bento’s late mistake ensures they must wait.

The equation is simple now. Barring a shock collapse against 15th-place Damac in their final league game on May 21, Al-Nassr remain favourites to finish the job. The gap, the form, the quality — all point their way. Yet the memory of those final seconds against Al Hilal will linger until the trophy is actually in their hands.

Ronaldo, who has not lifted a domestic title since leaving Manchester United after the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, tried to steady the mood after the match. To his 770 million-plus social media followers, he sent a short, pointed message: “The dream is close.”

Close, but not yet real. One more match, one more hurdle, and the question hangs in the air: will that fumbled ball be remembered as a painful footnote, or the moment that cracked open a title race that should already be over?
