Ronald Araujo Shines for Liverpool Amid Barcelona Dreams
Ronald Araujo walked off the Anfield pitch having just helped Liverpool edge past Atletico Madrid, but his thoughts were not only on the 2-1 win. Barcelona were still in the back of his mind. They always are.
On loan from the Catalan club this season, the Uruguayan centre-back delivered a commanding display on Wednesday night, anchoring Andoni Iraola’s back line in a high-intensity European-style clash. He did far more than just defend, too.
Araujo played a crucial role in Liverpool’s equaliser, producing a moment of real class inside a crowded penalty area. With his back to goal, he improvised a sharp backheel touch in the box, perfectly setting up Dominik Szoboszlai to whip in the cross that beat Jan Oblak. It was the kind of detail that changes games – and one that underlined why Liverpool were so keen to bring him in.
After the match, speaking to "Movistar Liga de Campeones", the conversation quickly turned from Liverpool’s win to Barcelona’s ambitions in the Champions League. Araujo did not hesitate.
“Definitely, Barcelona are among the leading contenders to win the Champions League,” he said. “They are performing brilliantly.”
There was no hint of distance in his words. Despite wearing red this season, his connection to the blaugrana remains strong. He admitted he still follows Barcelona closely and takes genuine pleasure in what his former team-mates are doing under Hansi Flick.
“I follow them. I am very happy for my team-mates,” he explained. “They have a great side. I always support them, and I am very grateful for what they are achieving now.”
It was a revealing glimpse into a player living two footballing lives at once: a key figure in Iraola’s Liverpool project, yet emotionally tied to a Barcelona side he still believes can conquer Europe.
