Romelu Lukaku Joins Fenerbahce: A New Chapter in Istanbul
Romelu Lukaku’s turbulent Napoli chapter is over. His next stop: Istanbul, and a starring role in Fenerbahce’s latest power play.
The veteran striker is leaving the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in a deal worth a reported €6m plus performance-related add-ons, a modest fee for such a heavyweight name but a clear signal of where Napoli are heading. The Italian champions have already moved on, reshaping their attack around Rasmus Hojlund, signed permanently from Manchester United earlier in the summer for €44m (£38m).
That contrast tells the story. Napoli are cashing out on an ageing, expensive forward to lean into a younger, long-term focal point. Lukaku’s wages weighed heavily, his body even more so. Fitness problems stalked his time in Naples, and relations frayed last spring when he undertook an unapproved training stint in Belgium. Sporting director Giovanni Manna warned of disciplinary action, and the episode accelerated a decision that now feels inevitable: a clean break.

Fenerbahce’s bold rebuild
The move drops Lukaku into the centre of an aggressive rebuild in Istanbul. Fenerbahce are not just tinkering; they are loading up. Determined to reclaim domestic dominance, they have turned this summer into a showcase of intent.
Lukaku joins a squad already reinforced by Nathan Ake from Manchester City, Mason Greenwood from Marseille, and Vedat Muriqi, fresh from a 23-goal La Liga season with Real Mallorca. On paper, that is a spine built to bully defences at home and make noise in Europe.
For Fenerbahce, Lukaku is more than a name. He is a reference point. A striker who, when fit and properly used, can still dominate penalty areas and drag teams deep into competitions. For Lukaku, this is something else entirely: a reset.
A fresh start after a fractured season
Last season with Napoli never truly got going for him. Lingering physical issues restricted the Belgian to just seven club appearances, a frustratingly thin return for a player of his stature in a title-winning side.
Yet the international stage told a different story. While his club campaign stuttered, Lukaku proved he could still handle the highest level, featuring in all six of Belgium’s matches at this summer’s World Cup and scoring three goals as they reached the quarter-finals. The body held up. The instincts remained sharp.
Turkey now offers him the chance to turn that flicker into a full season.
Life after Conte
This transfer also closes another chapter: his latest spell under Antonio Conte. Few managers have understood Lukaku as deeply as Conte, and few players have responded as emphatically.
Reunited at Napoli, the pair immediately delivered. In 2024-25, they powered the Partenopei to the Serie A title, with Lukaku scoring 14 league goals. It was a familiar pattern: Conte builds the framework, Lukaku supplies the finishing touch. Then, just as at Inter, the cycle ended. Both have now departed Naples, their partnership once again dissolved after success.
Their bond was forged at San Siro. Under Conte at Inter, Lukaku produced the most explosive football of his career, scoring 34 and 30 goals in back-to-back seasons. He led Inter to a Europa League final and then to the 2020-21 Scudetto, form so irresistible it convinced Chelsea to pay £97.5m to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.
That return never lived up to its billing. A single season, then the loans started.
A career of sharp turns
Since leaving Chelsea the second time, Lukaku’s path has zigzagged across Europe. A loan back to Inter ended with a run to the 2022-23 Champions League final. A spell at Roma followed. Those moves eventually set up his permanent transfer to Napoli in 2024, a deal that promised stability but instead produced another short-lived chapter.
Now comes Turkey, another pin in a career map that already includes some of Europe’s biggest clubs and biggest stages, with wildly mixed fortunes along the way.
Fenerbahce are betting that there is still a dominant version of Romelu Lukaku to be unlocked. If they’re right, the Süper Lig title race just gained a new heavyweight – and a striker with a point to prove all over again.
