Rodri Begins Barcelona Journey with Individual Training

Rodri’s first real day as a Barcelona player did not come with the usual fanfare of rondos and finishing drills in the thick of the group. It came on a separate pitch, on a tailored plan, away from the noise.

The World Cup winner, one of the headline arrivals of Barça’s summer, completed his first full training session at the club’s facilities on Friday under an individual programme. He had already taken part in the pre-match activation before the Joan Gamper Trophy, but this was different: boots on, work to do, no cameras, no show.

Fresh from his holidays and only a few days back into proper work, the 30-year-old midfielder is being eased in. Physically, he insists he is ready. The club’s medical and technical staff are not in a rush.

At his presentation, Rodri cut off any lingering doubts about his fitness.

“I’m ready to play already. The back operation that was talked about was nothing, it was an outpatient procedure. I’m ready to train with the team and, when the coach decides, once I’ve got some rhythm, I’ll be ready to play. I hope it will be as soon as possible.”

The message is clear: he wants minutes now. The plan says: not just yet.

After a rest day on Thursday, Barça stepped up preparations for Sunday’s La Liga opener away to Elche at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. While the main group worked at full tilt, Rodri did not train at the same intensity as his new teammates, sticking to the specific routine drawn up to bring him up to speed.

Even so, it is too early to cross his name off the list for the first official match of the season. Saturday’s final session and Hansi Flick’s press conference will be decisive in revealing whether the coach is ready to hand him a debut, even if only for a short spell.

Flick has been unwavering in recent weeks: he will not gamble on anyone’s health. For the German, full fitness is non‑negotiable, no matter the player’s status or the excitement around a new signing.

While Rodri worked apart, another big name finally rejoined the flow of a normal Barça training day.

Joao Cancelo gets going

Joao Cancelo, who has spent weeks in limbo waiting for his return to Spotify Camp Nou to be finalised, trained with the main group on Friday. The Portuguese full-back, after a drawn-out wait and plenty of uncertainty, is back in the rhythm of daily work.

He completed the session normally alongside all the available first-team players. Around them, a cluster of academy talent filled out the drills: Eder Aller, Xavi Espart, Jordi Pesquer, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Brian Farinas and Alvaro Cortes all took part, tasting another day at first-team level.

Whether Cancelo features against Elche is another matter. Flick can call him up only if the club manages to register him in time, and as things stand none of the new signings are registered. Even Andreas Christensen, who renewed his contract this summer, is still waiting for his status to be formalised.

So Barcelona move towards their league debut with a curious balance: a blockbuster midfielder on a personalised plan, an attacking full-back finally back in the group, and paperwork still holding as much weight as tactics.

The football will start on Sunday. The real question is how many of the new faces will be on the pitch when it does.
