Rio Ngumoha's Future Secured at Liverpool Amid Arsenal Interest

Arsenal went hunting for a left winger. Rio Ngumoha looks ready to slam the door.

The Premier League champions have spent the year searching for a successor to Gabriel Martinelli, failing with moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior and drifting into the season without a like-for-like replacement. That gap on Mikel Arteta’s depth chart helped shine a spotlight on Liverpool’s 18-year-old winger, one of the most talked-about wide prospects in the country.

Arsenal’s interest was real. So was everyone else’s. Bayern Munich were linked in the summer, and continental scouts have been circling for months.

But the message from Liverpool has never wavered: Rio Ngumoha is not for sale.

Liverpool close in on new deal

TEAMtalk reported earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract at Anfield. The framework is there; the lawyers are now turning it into a full, binding deal.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, nobody on Merseyside expects late drama.

“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha, and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season,” O’Rourke said, outlining a pathway that has clearly convinced the teenager.

“When you get top young players like this, they’re always going to attract interest from other clubs, but Liverpool are confident that his long-term future will be at Anfield… there is optimism I think on both sides that they can get this deal agreed.”

The pressure from elsewhere has only hardened Liverpool’s stance. They see a first-team player, not a trading chip.

Arsenal left watching from distance

For Arsenal, the picture is very different. Martinelli has gone, no direct replacement arrived, and the club’s failed attempts to land Rogers and Vinicius Junior have left Arteta leaning on what he already has.

David Ornstein has already hinted that Arsenal “could see something happening” in January as they revisit the market for a winger. Ngumoha, naturally, sits on any elite recruitment list for that position.

Yet every sign points to the Gunners being too late.

Ngumoha has bought into the plan laid out at Liverpool: regular starts, a clear route into the core of the team, and a club publicly backing him as a cornerstone of their next cycle. With talks ongoing and both sides relaxed about the outcome, Arsenal’s hopes of pouncing on uncertainty look to be fading fast.

‘Rio is Liverpool’s future’

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has echoed that mood around Anfield, stressing how firmly Liverpool have shut the door on suitors.

“In the summer, we had many rumours about Bayern Munich and more clubs, but the message from Liverpool was always the same: the player is not leaving, the player is not for sale and Liverpool trust Rio. Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano said.

“Ngumoha is one of the best talents in his position around, so it is normal to have clubs looking at him. At the same time, the message from Liverpool was not for sale and no exit. There was not even a discussion or a negotiation.”

The Arsenal links, Romano explained, stem from the obvious gap in Arteta’s squad rather than any softening of Liverpool’s stance.

“Now there are rumours about Arsenal. Why are there rumours about Arsenal? Because Arsenal did not officially sign anyone to replace Martinelli. They replaced Leandro Trossard with Christos Tzolis, then Martinelli left and Arsenal decided to stay with the team they have. But Arsenal always look at opportunities.

“If there is a chance to sign Rio Ngumoha in 2027, 2028 or whenever, for sure Arsenal would be among the clubs interested. And not only Arsenal. I am sure there will also be clubs from abroad.”

The market won’t forget Ngumoha. It just has to wait.

Contract talks set the tone

For now, the story is simple: Liverpool are in negotiations, and they intend to win.

“There will be strong interest in Rio Ngumoha. But at the moment, Liverpool want to keep the boy and Liverpool are discussing a new contract with Rio,” Romano added. “There are conversations ongoing about the contract. Then you still need to get it done. You still need to give the guarantees the player wants and find the balance on every single point.”

Those guarantees — minutes, role, status — will define the next phase of Ngumoha’s career. Liverpool believe they can offer all of it at Anfield.

Arsenal, watching a top target drift further from reach, may soon be forced back to the drawing board in their search for a new left-sided star.
