Rio Ferdinand Questions Manchester United's Transfer Strategy After Hull Defeat

Rio Ferdinand has raised fresh doubts over Manchester United’s transfer strategy after their shock defeat to Hull City, questioning whether the club have left themselves short where it matters most – up front.

Speaking on his YouTube channel in the aftermath of the loss, the former United defender turned pundit homed in on the budget and the lack of a marquee centre-forward addition.

“The big question is, does United’s budget stretch to go and get an Ollie Watkins or someone like that now?” Ferdinand asked, throwing the spotlight directly on Michael Carrick and his recruitment team.

United have poured much of their summer spending into midfield. Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba have all arrived to strengthen the core of the side, a clear attempt to reshape the engine room. The consequence was laid bare at Hull: a £73m striker sat on the bench while the team laboured.

Benjamin Sesko, the headline attacking signing, watched on as Matheus Cunha was preferred to lead the line. United failed to find a way through, and the decision instantly became a talking point.

For Ferdinand, the issue runs deeper than one team selection. He believes United missed a glaring opportunity in the market, and he did not hide his frustration over Danny Welbeck’s move to Stamford Bridge.

“If Danny Welbeck was on the market, and he clearly was, that’s one who Man United should have gone for because he could still have had an important role to play despite being happy to be on the bench at this stage of his career,” he said.

Welbeck’s versatility, experience and willingness to accept a squad role, in Ferdinand’s eyes, made him an ideal depth option. Instead, he has ended up at a direct rival, leaving United still searching for the right balance in attack.

That is where Ollie Watkins comes into the conversation. The Aston Villa forward has been relentlessly productive since his arrival from Brentford in 2020, racking up 108 goals for the club. He is exactly the sort of proven Premier League finisher Ferdinand believes United now lack, and the type of signing that would stretch any remaining budget to its limit.

The tension between what United need and what they can afford is clear. With resources already heavily committed to midfield, Ferdinand openly wondered whether there is enough left in the pot to even contemplate a move for someone of Watkins’ calibre.

Amid all that, Sesko’s role looms large. The Slovenia international may have been overlooked at Hull, but Ferdinand insisted his importance to United’s season cannot be overstated.

“The importance of Benjamin Sesko is huge, especially going to a place like that. You need him in the team and I’m interested to see how he does this season in that sense,” he said.

The message is blunt: if United can’t stretch to a Watkins-type signing now, Sesko has to grow into that role quickly. The defeat at Hull has already sharpened the debate. The next few weeks will reveal whether Carrick’s gamble on midfield over firepower was bold planning or a costly miscalculation.
