Rio Ferdinand Questions Manchester United's Transfer Strategy After Hull Defeat
Rio Ferdinand has cast fresh doubt over Manchester United’s transfer strategy after their shock defeat to Hull City, questioning whether the club still has the financial muscle to land a marquee striker before the window closes.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former United defender zeroed in on the budget and the decision-making behind the summer rebuild under Michael Carrick.
“The big question is, does United’s budget stretch to go and get an Ollie Watkins or someone like that now?” Ferdinand asked, putting a spotlight on the lack of a ruthless centre-forward.
United have invested heavily in other areas of the pitch. The club’s summer business has been dominated by midfield reinforcements, with Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba all arriving to reshape the engine room. The price of that, Ferdinand suggested, might be a frontline left short of top-tier firepower.
His frustration did not stop there. Ferdinand also lamented the club’s failure to move for Danny Welbeck before his switch to Stamford Bridge.
“If Danny Welbeck was on the market, and he clearly was, that’s one who Man United should have gone for because he could still have had an important role to play despite being happy to be on the bench at this stage of his career,” he said.
Welbeck’s experience and willingness to accept a supporting role, in Ferdinand’s eyes, made him an obvious squad option for a side still trying to find balance in attack.
The contrast with Ollie Watkins is stark. The Aston Villa forward has been relentlessly productive since joining from Brentford in 2020, racking up 108 goals and establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most dependable finishers. That kind of output is exactly what United lack.
The sense of muddled thinking only grew at Hull. Despite commanding a £73m fee, Benjamin Sesko was left on the bench, with Matheus Cunha chosen to spearhead the attack in the shock loss. For Ferdinand, that decision cut against the grain of what this United side needs.
He was clear about Sesko’s significance in the months ahead.
“The importance of Benjamin Sesko is huge, especially going to a place like that. You need him in the team and I’m interested to see how he does this season in that sense,” Ferdinand said.
United now face an awkward question: with the budget seemingly stretched, can Carrick still find the elite No 9 Ferdinand is calling for, or will Sesko be forced to grow into that role under intense scrutiny, and fast?
