Richarlison expresses frustration over blocked loan to Vasco da Gama

Richarlison has laid bare his frustration over a failed return to Vasco da Gama, telling supporters the move collapsed because Tottenham refused to sanction the loan on his terms.

Speaking directly to Vasco fans in an emotional Instagram video, the Brazilian forward said he turned down other options in order to push for a switch back to Rio de Janeiro until the end of the year.

“Other offers were made to me but I made it very clear I wanted to join Vasco until December,” Richarlison said. “Unfortunately, Tottenham set a limit on the loan, which is why it didn’t work out.”

The 27-year-old, who grew up a Vasco supporter, leaned into the camera and spoke as much to his past as to his present.

“I think I’ll be at Sao Januario soon, and in Barreira, and you know how fond I am of you all. One day I’m going to make this dream come true; it’s my dream, my grandfather’s dream, and my family’s dream. I’m speaking from the heart here because I really wanted to play for Vasco.”

Those words land against a stark reality in north London.

Last season, Richarlison finished as Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League with 11 goals, a vital haul in a turbulent campaign that saw Spurs dragged far closer to the relegation scrap than expected. His finishing helped steady a listing season and kept any genuine drop fears at bay.

Now he finds himself frozen out.

Despite that contribution, Richarlison has been left out of Tottenham’s registered Premier League squad for the current campaign. He has featured just once in the league so far, a bruising 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend.

The landscape around him has shifted quickly. The arrival of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City has nudged him even further down the pecking order under Ange Postecoglou, reducing his prospects of meaningful minutes as his contract runs down.

Richarlison is into the final 12 months of the five-year deal he signed when he joined Spurs from Everton in 2022.

A year left, no squad place, and a blocked route back to the club of his heart. For a player who insists he “really wanted to play for Vasco”, the next move in his career now looks as decisive as any he has faced.
