Real Madrid Targets Bastoni as Mourinho’s Rebuild Intensifies

Preseason is a week away at Real Madrid and the squad José Mourinho will lead back onto the Valdebebas pitches is still unfinished. The departures have started, the arrivals have begun, but the puzzle is missing two key pieces: a centre-back and a midfielder.

The club has already waved goodbye to Dani Ceballos, Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, a trio whose exits underline the scale of this summer’s reset. Four signings are already through the door, yet Mourinho wants more steel and balance through the spine. One defender. One midfielder. Both, in his mind, non‑negotiable.

The midfield hunt has hit turbulence. Options have narrowed after moves for Matues Fernandes and Enzo Fernandez were shut down, leaving Madrid without a clear, open pathway to their preferred target in the middle of the pitch. That discussion is on hold.

The defence is not.

Here, there is a name, a profile, and a plan: Alessandro Bastoni.

Bastoni, the chosen man

According to SPORT, via journalist Fabio Gatto, Real Madrid are preparing to contact Inter Milan this week to test the waters for the Italian centre-back. The idea is simple: find out Inter’s intentions and establish a starting price. Then move fast.

Madrid do not want a saga. They want clarity, and they want it now.

Inter, newly crowned Serie A champions, are expected to value Bastoni at around €65 million. It is a figure that reflects his status as one of the most accomplished left-footed centre-backs in Europe and the importance he holds in their back line.

Yet the player’s stance has shifted. Bastoni, the report notes, wants a change of scenery and has set his sights on playing for Real Madrid. That desire has already surfaced in contract talks: he recently rejected a renewal proposal from Inter, a deal that included a pay rise, in a clear sign that his priorities lie elsewhere.

For Madrid, that kind of intent matters. It turns a difficult negotiation into a possible one.

A left foot for a crowded back line

From a sporting perspective, Bastoni fits a very specific need. Mourinho’s current stock of centre-backs is dominated by right-footers. The coaching staff want a natural left-sided defender to balance the build-up, open passing angles, and complement the existing options.

Bastoni ticks that box cleanly. Tall, composed, left-footed, and comfortable stepping into midfield, he offers a profile the squad currently lacks.

But to bring him in, Madrid must first clear the traffic.

The numbers at the back are swollen. Eleven defenders are on the books, and the club is already working on trimming that list. One centre-back and one left-back are expected to make way, with Fran Garcia and Raul Asencio identified as prime candidates for a summer exit.

Only once space is freed can Bastoni realistically arrive. That is the trade-off: outgoings to unlock the marquee defensive signing Mourinho wants.

The clock is ticking. Preseason looms, the market is moving, and Real Madrid are trying to land a left-footed pillar for their new era. Whether Inter hold firm at €65 million, and how far Madrid are willing to go for Bastoni, will say plenty about the real ambition behind this rebuild.
