RB Leipzig Secure Guiu from Chelsea on Long-Term Deal
RB Leipzig have moved decisively in the market, prising Spanish centre-forward Guiu away from Chelsea and tying him down to a contract until June 2031.
The transfer ends weeks of speculation around the 20-year-old’s future, with a cluster of European clubs circling. Leipzig’s pitch won out.
“Joining RB Leipzig is exactly the right step for me. The club made a real effort to bring me here and, in our talks, gave me a clear idea of the role I can play in the team,” Guiu said after the move was confirmed.
From La Masia prodigy to Premier League bottleneck
Guiu’s path has never been short on big names. He broke through at Barcelona at just 17, a debut that marked him out as one of La Masia’s next great hopes. His switch to Chelsea in 2024 was billed as a statement signing for the Premier League side, a coup that underlined their aggressive youth recruitment.
Reality bit quickly.
Chelsea’s swollen squad left him fighting for scraps of game time. Starts in the league were rare, rhythm almost impossible to find. When he did get minutes, it was often away from the domestic spotlight.
He answered in Europe. In the Conference League, the Spaniard showed why clubs had tracked him since his teenage years, delivering the kind of performances that reminded everyone of his ceiling. But with Chelsea under pressure to trim numbers and raise funds to stay on the right side of financial regulations, a sale became less a surprise and more an inevitability.
Even his loan moves reflected the turbulence. A short spell at Sunderland was cut short after less than a month as injuries at Chelsea forced a recall, another jolt in a stop-start London chapter.
Leipzig’s plan, not a panic buy
Inside Leipzig, this was not an opportunistic swoop. It was a long chase finally completed.
Managing Director for Sport Marcel Schafer made it clear Guiu had been earmarked early as a key piece in their attacking rebuild.
“Marc is a very good fit for our RB DNA with his intensity, pace and incredible work rate. He’s relentless in his work without the ball, while he’s also a real presence in the box and is always looking to get at goal,” Schafer said, outlining exactly why the club pushed so hard.
This was a profile-driven signing, not a deadline-day scramble.
“We’ve been in contact with him for a long time and have followed his development very closely, so we’re delighted that he has chosen RB Leipzig. We’re convinced he has the quality and mentality to make an immediate impact, while he still has plenty of room to develop further,” Schafer added.
Leipzig see a striker built for their high-intensity game: strong enough to occupy defenders, quick enough to press, and hungry enough to live inside the penalty area. In a system that demands constant running and sharp transitions, those traits matter as much as goals.
A calculated reset in Germany
For Guiu, this is not a gamble. It is a reset.
After Barcelona and Chelsea, he joins another club with Champions League ambitions, but one with a proven record of turning raw potential into finished product. The Red Bull pathway has already carried several young forwards from promise to elite level, and the Spaniard has done his homework.
"RB Leipzig have shown time and again that young players can develop here at the very highest level. RBL are also an ambitious club with high aspirations in every competition. I want to play my part in achieving those goals while continuing to improve every day," he said.
The uncertainty of London is gone. In its place: a long contract, a defined role, and a club that has built its modern identity on giving players like Guiu the platform Chelsea could not.
Now the question shifts from where he will play to how quickly he can turn that promise into goals in the Bundesliga.
