Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals End of an Era for Austria Football
The uneasy truce at the Austrian Football Association looks set to snap on Friday. According to reports from Kurier and Krone, the supervisory board will meet to decide the fate of sporting director Peter Schöttel – and all signs point to the end of his nine-year spell at the ÖFB.
This is not a routine changing of the guard. It is the fallout from a power struggle.
Relationship with Rangnick “beyond repair”
The core of the crisis is the broken relationship between Schöttel and national team coach Ralf Rangnick. Internally, that fracture is now viewed as irreparable. Schöttel has already been pushed to the sidelines by the federation, a clear signal that the balance of power has shifted.
Former Austria striker and current Sky pundit Marc Janko underlined how deep the rift runs. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said of the developments.
For months, the cooperation between the sporting director and the German coach has effectively collapsed. “With Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko explained. He added that Rangnick, when dealing with “all the matters that are important to him”, has long stopped going through Schöttel and instead works “via other people”.
In elite football, that kind of bypass is usually the beginning of the end. In Austria’s case, it may be the full stop.
A golden spell under Schöttel
If Friday does confirm his departure, it will close one of the most successful chapters in recent ÖFB history.
Schöttel, now 59, joined the federation in 2017. He arrived as U19 coach, but his rise was rapid: just two months later he was elevated to overall sporting director. From that point, Austria’s national team began to stack up milestones.
The ÖFB side qualified for the European Championship in back-to-back cycles, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. Those tournaments restored Austria as a serious presence on the continental stage.
The pinnacle came last summer. Under the federation’s sporting leadership, Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years. The long-awaited return to the global stage ended in the round of 32, where they were knocked out by eventual world champions Spain, but the breakthrough itself marked a historic success for the association.
Now that era stands on the brink, not because of results, but because two of its central figures can no longer work together.
Prödl emerges as the favourite
The ÖFB has not yet made an official decision on who will step into Schöttel’s role. Still, the succession debate has already started inside the building.
Krone reports that an internal favourite is emerging: Sebastian Prödl.
The former Bundesliga defender, who spent key years of his playing career with Werder Bremen, has been in charge of the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024. His work there is said to be highly valued, and his standing within the federation is strong.
One factor could outweigh everything else. Prödl is believed to enjoy an exceptionally good relationship with Rangnick – the very area where Schöttel’s position has crumbled.
If the supervisory board confirms Schöttel’s exit on Friday, Austria will not just be choosing a new sporting director. It will be choosing which vision – and which partnership – carries its national team into the next cycle.
