QPR's Promising Start: A Cautious Perspective

Queens Park Rangers’ bright start has caught the eye, but one long-time observer is urging a little restraint.

Ian McCullough, a QPR supporter and journalist, sees clear signs of progress, particularly in the depth of Marti Cifuentes’ squad, yet he believes this is no time for wild predictions.

“At Blackburn at the weekend, they won the game through the strength of the bench,” McCullough said, highlighting the difference from last season. “They've got a real quality on the bench that they didn't have last season. In that kind of side the club has progressed.”

The impact substitutes at Ewood Park underlined a new dimension for Rangers: the ability to change a game late, not simply hang on. Where last year the options felt thin, this campaign has already shown fresher legs and sharper quality waiting in reserve.

McCullough, though, is not getting carried away. He points to the fixture list as a reality check.

QPR’s early opponents – Blackburn, Portsmouth and Bolton – are, in his view, sides Rangers should be beating if they are serious about climbing the table. Take a wrong step in any of those matches, he argues, and the narrative would look very different.

“But as I keep saying with QPR, they've played three teams really that they should be beating – Blackburn, Portsmouth, Bolton. Had they lost any of those games, questions would be asked.”

The mood in West London is lighter, the performances more assured, and the bench stronger. The real test is still coming: can this version of QPR stand up when the opposition grows tougher and the margin for error disappears?
