PSG's Strategic Moves: Godts and Barcola Transfers
Paris Saint-Germain are quietly rearranging the pieces of their attack, and two names now sit at the heart of it: Mika Godts and Bradley Barcola.
The French champions are closing in on Ajax winger Godts in a move that is set to unlock Barcola’s long-anticipated switch to Liverpool, with the two deals now effectively tied together.
Godts deal pushes Barcola towards Anfield
PSG have stepped up their pursuit of Godts and lodged a new offer that is now close to Ajax’s valuation. An agreement for the 21-year-old is expected to be within reach this weekend, with agent Jorge Mendes playing a key role in driving talks forward.
Inside the club, Godts has been clearly identified as Barcola’s replacement. His arrival is seen as the trigger PSG need to finally give the green light to the France international’s departure.
The proposed fee for Godts is understood to be around €50m. Once that move is sealed, PSG believe they will have the freedom to sanction Barcola’s exit after initially digging in over a £145m asking price.
Liverpool in pole position – but price still bites
Liverpool have already done the groundwork with Barcola. Personal terms are agreed, and his preference for a move to Anfield has never really been in doubt.
Arsenal have monitored the situation and held talks of their own, but sources indicate Liverpool remain at the front of the queue, with the 23-year-old having committed in principle to joining them.
The problem is the fee.
Liverpool currently value a potential deal at around £100m. PSG, for their part, believe a compromise could be found closer to £125m. That kind of package would still put Barcola on course to become the most expensive British transfer ever, eclipsing last summer’s record move for Alexander Isak to Newcastle.
PSG have now told Liverpool they are prepared to soften their stance and come down from the original £145m figure. But they also want a clear step up from Liverpool’s current valuation. The gap remains sizeable, even if the lines of communication are open.
PSG’s wider attacking reshuffle
This is not a one-off deal for PSG; it is part of a broader succession plan in attack.
Ferran Torres already has an agreement in place to arrive from Barcelona, earmarked as the replacement for Goncalo Ramos. Maghnes Akliouche has come in to take the role left vacant by Lee Kang-In. Godts, in that carefully mapped structure, is the man chosen specifically to fill the space Barcola would leave.
That explains the urgency. PSG are pushing hard to get the Godts transfer over the line, knowing it is the final internal piece they need before they can fully engage on Barcola’s sale.
If Ajax and PSG strike a deal for Godts this weekend, the last real obstacle to Barcola’s move will be the size of Liverpool’s bid.
For now, the board is set: Godts is edging towards Paris, Barcola is primed for Anfield, and PSG are finally showing signs of flexibility. The next move belongs to Liverpool.
