Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan
Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their attacking edge by securing Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on a season-long loan, banking on one of Cobham’s most highly regarded teenagers to add fresh pace out wide.
The 17-year-old arrives with only one senior appearance for Chelsea – a cameo in a 7-0 FA Cup demolition of Port Vale – but his trajectory inside the club tells a bigger story. He signed his first professional deal with the west London side in January and quickly found himself nudging the first-team door.
By the end of last season, Kavuma-McQueen had made Chelsea’s match-day squads for Champions League ties against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, then stepped into the frame for Premier League fixtures with Liverpool and Tottenham. He did not need minutes on the pitch to make an impression; his presence on those benches underlined how highly the club rate him.
That trust has been built over years in the academy. Kavuma-McQueen has climbed through the age groups at Cobham, becoming a regular for both the Under-18s and U21s, and forcing his way into the 21s setup last year. This summer, he joined Chelsea’s first team for pre-season, getting minutes on what boss John Mousinho described as “their very exciting prospect tour” with the senior squad.
At Portsmouth, he will be thrown straight into a competitive wide department. The young attacker, comfortable on either flank, will fight for game time alongside Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith in Pompey’s wide areas, giving Mousinho a very different set of tools on the touchline.
“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.”
The Portsmouth manager made it clear this is not a speculative punt on youth but a targeted move after long-term scouting.
“We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door,” Mousinho said. “I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”
Portsmouth now have what they wanted: raw Premier League talent on the flanks, hungry for minutes and already schooled at Champions League level. How quickly Kavuma-McQueen turns that promise into end product will shape not just his own rise, but the rhythm of Pompey’s season.
