Plymouth Secures Play-Off Spot with 3-0 Victory Over Barnsley
Plymouth surged into the Sky Bet League One play-off places with a ruthless 3-0 dismantling of Barnsley at Home Park, climbing to sixth on a night when everything clicked in front of goal.
The game was barely underway when on-loan Tottenham winger Oli Irow lit the place up. Less than a minute on the clock. One pass. One touch. One vicious finish.
Julio Pleguezuelo fired the ball out to the left, Irow took over, drove at Tyrese Noslin, chopped inside and unleashed a thunderous right-foot strike. Rogan Ravenhill flung himself across goal, but the shot screamed past him and into the top corner. Barnsley were behind before they had settled into shape.
Stung, the visitors tried to respond. Noslin almost made amends on 20 minutes, latching onto a loose ball just inside the area as Argyle tried to clear. He struck it cleanly, low and fierce, but it flashed inches wide of the post. A warning for Plymouth. A let-off they would punish almost immediately.
Two minutes later, the gap doubled.
From a long throw launched into the box by Argyle captain Wes Harding, Ravenhill failed to claim cleanly under pressure. The ball spilled invitingly and Ronan Curtis reacted quickest, nodding into an empty net. Simple finish, brutal in its impact. Barnsley looked stunned, their keeper left to stare at the turf.
Curtis, full of confidence, nearly buried them before half-time. He rose to meet a cross with a looping header that had Ravenhill beaten, only for Connor O'Riordan to retreat and hook the ball off the line. It kept Barnsley alive, but only just.
Any hope of a comeback vanished five minutes after the restart.
Argyle striker Bim Pepple took possession on the left edge of the area, back to goal, O'Riordan tight to him. One sharp spin, a burst of space, and Pepple curled a precise finish into the far corner. Clinical, composed, and the final word on the scoreline.
From there, Plymouth controlled the tempo, Barnsley chasing shadows and damage limitation rather than points. The home crowd could relax, the league table suddenly looking a lot more interesting.
Argyle are on the march. The question now is how long they can stay in that top-six traffic.
