Philippe Coutinho Returns to Football with Santos

Philippe Coutinho is back in football – and back in Brazil – after signing a short-term deal with Santos that runs until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old playmaker, who once lit up Europe with Liverpool and Barcelona, had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. Burned out and mentally exhausted, he stepped away from the game earlier this year and openly admitted he simply could not face professional football.

Now he returns wearing the No. 11 shirt, stepping into a club that has just welcomed another global star: his childhood friend Neymar.

Neymar’s messages that wouldn’t stop

Coutinho made no attempt to hide how decisive Neymar was in dragging him back to the pitch. Speaking at his unveiling, he detailed a months-long exchange that began the moment he left Vasco.

"Neymar certainly played a very important role in my coming here," Coutinho said, as quoted by ESPN. "He's a player who needs no introduction, a friend I've had since childhood, and I think he was the first person in football to send me a message when I left Vasco."

That first message came quickly. Too quickly for a player who felt he had nothing left to give.

"The next day he had already sent me a message, but at that moment I said: 'Look Ney, it would be a pleasure to play with you, but I'm not feeling well right now, it's not possible' and it really didn't make sense to me."

Coutinho had stepped away to protect his mental health. Football, for the first time in his life, no longer fit.

A slow rethink, then a turning point

Time passed. Neymar kept trying.

"Months later he contacted me again, but my answer was the same. Then two weeks ago he sent me another message," Coutinho revealed.

That third message landed differently. The midfielder stopped. Thought. The idea of playing again no longer felt like a burden.

"Then I stopped, reconsidered. I wanted to go back to playing football and I thought: 'Why not?' I'm going to a big club, in another city."

The equation had changed: a fresh environment, a giant of Brazilian football, and the chance to rebuild alongside someone who has known him since childhood.

"It would be unfair to me not being able to go back to work and not being able to go back to playing football. I wanted to thank the president, Mattos and Ney. I'm happy to accept this challenge."

From walking away to walking back into the spotlight at Santos, Coutinho’s return now carries a simple question: after choosing himself first, how much of the old magic can he still summon?
