Philippe Coutinho Reunites with Neymar at Santos FC

Philippe Coutinho has reunited with close friend and Brazil team-mate Neymar at Santos FC, signing a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old playmaker has been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He had returned to his boyhood side in 2024 and made 81 appearances before walking away, admitting he was “tired mentally”.

Now comes a different kind of homecoming.

Santos announced his arrival with a nod to the past and a clear statement about the present. The club posted an old photograph of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, then matched it with a fresh shot of the pair recreating the same pose in the gym, older, heavier with experience, but back under the same badge.

The unveiling continued inside the dressing room. In a video shared by Santos, Coutinho walks through the door to be greeted by a hug from Neymar and delivers a line that says everything about the moment: “If it’s a dream, I don’t want to wake up.”

Neymar, who also came through the Santos academy, returned to the club in January last year. Despite sharing a decade with Brazil and crossing paths at the very top of the European game, this will be the first time the two friends actually play together at club level.

Coutinho’s journey to this point has taken in some of the sport’s biggest stages. He left Vasco for Inter Milan as a teenager, then truly exploded at Liverpool after arriving in 2013. At Anfield he scored 54 goals in 201 games, becoming the creative heartbeat of the side and earning a £142m move to Barcelona in 2018.

That record-breaking transfer sent him on a tour of Europe’s elite. He had spells with Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Al-Duhail before circling back to Vasco. Now, another chapter opens in Brazil, this time alongside Neymar in the white of Santos.

Two former prodigies, one shared pitch at last.
