Owen Wijndal Leaves Ajax as Left-Back Competition Intensifies
Owen Wijndal has left Ajax with immediate effect, bringing a swift and somewhat stark end to a spell that never fully lived up to its billing.
The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a cornerstone for the future, found himself without any realistic prospect of playing time. After weeks of talks, both club and player agreed to terminate his contract, Voetbal International reports. Where he goes next is still unknown.
Ajax had Wijndal tied down until mid-2027, but chose to rip up the deal now, creating space in the wage bill and clearing a crowded position. It is a decisive move, and one that underlines how quickly the hierarchy on the left side of defence has changed in Amsterdam.
This summer, Ajax moved aggressively in that area, bringing in Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents. Henrique had already jumped ahead of Wijndal in recent weeks. Then came the clearest signal yet.
In the 0-4 win over Telstar, 19-year-old Spaniard Torrents came off the bench to make his mark. Wijndal did not move. He stayed on the bench for the full 90 minutes, watching a teenager step into the role that was once mapped out for him.
Behind the scenes, conversations had been ongoing for several weeks as both parties searched for a way out of the stalemate. The outcome arrived this week: a clean break. On Wednesday, Wijndal said his goodbyes to his team-mates and walked away from the Johan Cruyff ArenA as a free agent.
Ajax had brought him in from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, a significant investment in a Dutch international full-back entering his prime. The trajectory never quite matched the expectations. During the 2023/24 season, he was sent on loan to Royal Antwerp FC, a sign that his status at Ajax had already started to fade.
Even so, his time in Amsterdam was not without impact. The Zaandam-born defender made 77 official appearances for the club, contributing 3 goals and 7 assists. Respectable numbers, but not enough to hold off a new wave of competition and a reset under a different vision.

Ajax now move forward with Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents battling for the left-back spot. Wijndal, suddenly unattached at 26, faces a different kind of fight: choosing the right next step in a career that still has time to be reshaped.
