Nottingham Forest Sign Liam Delap for £45m—A New Era Begins

Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the market, sealing the signing of Liam Delap from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £45m, with a further £5m in potential add-ons.

The 23-year-old has signed a long-term contract that runs until 2031, leaving Stamford Bridge after just a single season. For Chelsea, it represents sharp business: they bank an instant £20m profit having bought the striker from Ipswich Town for around £30m in June 2025.

Forest, though, are paying for upside. And they know it.

Delap buys into Glasner’s project

Delap arrives at the City Ground talking like a player ready to lead a new era.

"I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history," he told club media after the move was confirmed. "I spoke to the manager and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here.

"I can't wait to hear the noise at the City Ground and have the fans on my side because I know how loud and important they are. As a team we can build something really strong and the main aim is to challenge and be a top club in the Premier League."

Those words will land well with supporters who have watched Oliver Glasner reshape Forest’s identity. High intensity, aggressive pressing, front-foot football. Delap believes that style can drag even more out of his game.

A striker with scars – and serious upside

On paper, the numbers from last season at Chelsea are modest. One league goal. For a £50m centre-forward, that will raise eyebrows.

But Forest are betting on the player who lit up the 2024-25 campaign at Ipswich Town. In a struggling side that went down, Delap still scored 12 Premier League goals and regularly bullied defences with his direct running.

He also produced 26 shot-ending carries that season – the highest figure among all Premier League strikers. That statistic underlines why Forest have pushed so hard: pace, power, and a willingness to drive at defenders from anywhere across the front line.

He arrives with a famous surname too. The son of former defender Rory Delap, he has grown up around the demands of the top level. Forest now need him to turn that background and raw profile into consistent, ruthless output.

Fight for the No 9 shirt

Delap will not walk into this side. He steps straight into a fierce four-way contest for the central striking role, battling Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo for minutes.

Glasner suddenly has very different types of forwards to choose from: the experienced target man in Wood, the technical link play of Jesus, the movement and sharpness of Kalimuendo – and now Delap’s physical, straight-line threat.

The timing of the move adds another layer. Forest head to Anfield this weekend to face Liverpool, looking to shake off back-to-back defeats against Leeds United in both the Premier League opener and the Carabao Cup. Delap could make his debut in one of the most intimidating arenas in English football.

If selected, he will be asked to do exactly what Forest have paid for: stretch Liverpool’s back line, run channels, turn long clearances into attacking moments, and show a penalty-box edge that justifies that hefty price tag.

The City Ground will make its judgement soon enough. Is this the striker who turns Forest into genuine Premier League contenders, or a high-risk roll of the dice in an unforgiving league?
