NorthEast United Secures India Defender Pramveer Singh

NorthEast United FC have landed one of the most coveted young players in Indian football, beating off interest from several Indian Super League rivals to secure the signature of India international defender Pramveer Singh.

The 18-year-old left-footed centre-back, out of contract after the 2025-26 season with Punjab FC, has agreed a three-year deal with the Highlanders, with paperwork set to be completed shortly. For a player chased by at least three ISL clubs, the choice was deliberate, not sentimental.

Playing time tipped the scales.

“Playing time was a major factor in his decision. Both parties have agreed on a three-year contract and the paperwork will be completed soon,” a source tracking the transfer told Khel Now. Bigger offers were on the table. A clearer pathway to the pitch was not.

A rapid climb through India’s ranks

Pramveer’s trajectory has been steep and relentless.

In just three years, he has moved through India’s U-17, U-20 and U-23 sides and into the senior national team. Earlier this month, he made his senior debut for India against Tajikistan, another youth graduate stepping into the Blue Tigers setup with minimal fuss and maximum expectation.

His rise has not been accidental. NorthEast United assistant coach Naushad Moosa knows the defender well from their time together with the India U-23s, where Pramveer emerged as one of the standout performers during the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers. India narrowly missed out on qualification, but his calm, assured displays at the back were one of the clear positives from that campaign.

Coaches took note. So did scouts. So did ISL clubs.

From Punjab FC academy to record-breaking debutant

The first real spotlight hit Pramveer during the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup. From there, he stayed on a steady, demanding path: Punjab FC’s youth setup, the Indian Youth League, and then the Reliance Foundation Development League.

In 2024, he played every minute of Punjab FC’s successful RFDL campaign, anchoring a side that went on to lift the title. That consistency fast-tracked his promotion to the senior squad.

Then came the record.

Still 17, he started against Mohun Bagan at 17 years and 189 days, becoming the youngest starter in ISL history. It was more than a statistical quirk; it was a signal that Punjab trusted him in high-stakes games and that he could handle the stage.

By the 2025-26 season, he had 13 appearances across all competitions, a goal to his name, and a growing reputation as one of the most promising young defenders in the country. Not a finished product, but clearly a defender with tools modern coaches crave: left-footed, composed, and brave enough to play.

Why NorthEast United moved first – and fastest

NorthEast United’s interest did not arrive overnight. The club had been tracking Pramveer for months, aware that his contract situation at Punjab FC could open a window.

They see him as a long-term pillar, not a short-term gamble. Under head coach Juan Pedro Benali, NorthEast United have doubled down on a strategy that leans heavily on young Indian talent, trusting development and minutes over marquee names on the bench.

Benali’s work with emerging players has built him a strong reputation in India. For a teenager already exposed to every age-group level of national football, the promise of regular football under a coach known for improving youngsters carries real weight.

Several clubs could pay more. NorthEast United offered something different: a defined role, a realistic route into the starting XI, and a coaching staff that already understands his strengths and weaknesses.

For a defender who has never lingered long at any rung of the ladder, the choice fits his pattern. He has always moved where the next challenge is clearest.

Now that next step leads to Guwahati, to a Highlanders side betting that one of India’s brightest young centre-backs will grow fastest where the minutes are hardest-earned – on the pitch, not on paper.
