Nordin Jackers Faces Career Crossroads at Club Brugge
Nordin Jackers is staring at a January crossroads.
Once seen as the natural understudy at Club Brugge, the 29-year-old now finds himself pushed to the margins, relegated to third-choice goalkeeper and facing a decision that could define the rest of his career.
The arrival of Yann Sommer from Inter set the tone for the season. Jackers knew the score: the Swiss international would start, he would wait. Second choice, ready when called upon, was a role he could live with. It kept him close enough to the pitch, close enough to opportunity.
That hierarchy has been ripped up.
According to HLN, head coach Ivan Leko has promoted highly rated Belgian youngster Argus Vanden Driessche to second in line behind Sommer. At 19, Vanden Driessche is now the preferred back-up, a clear signal from Club Brugge about where they see their future in goal.
Sommer himself has not exactly glided into life at Brugge. He pulled off some important saves at the weekend against Antwerp, but he was also at fault for the goal the side conceded. Those early slips have not shaken the club’s belief in him, nor their conviction in Vanden Driessche. If anything, the reshuffle underlines how strongly the staff rate the teenager: even with the new No.1 still settling, it is the youngster, not the experienced Jackers, who has been moved up the pecking order.
For Jackers, the message could hardly be clearer.
He has shown he can handle pressure when called upon, stepping in for Simon Mignolet in previous seasons and delivering solid performances. Parts of the Club Brugge fanbase would have accepted, even welcomed, the idea of Jackers starting this campaign as No.1. That debate is now over. At his age, with his ambition, sitting as third choice is not a role he can realistically accept.
A move in January now looks less like an option and more like a necessity.
Within the Belgian Pro League, his name will not be a hard sell. Since joining from OH Leuven, Jackers has put together enough convincing displays to attract interest from clubs in need of a reliable, ready-made starter. He brings experience, he brings calm, and he brings the hunger of a goalkeeper who knows his prime years are ticking by.
Club Brugge have nailed their colours to Sommer and Vanden Driessche.
Jackers’ next club will tell us how determined he is to make sure those years are spent on the pitch, not on the bench.
