Noah Okafor Refuses to Play for Switzerland Under Murat Yakin
Noah Okafor has drawn a hard line. The Leeds United forward has announced he will no longer play for Switzerland while Murat Yakin remains in charge, saying the trust between player and head coach has been shattered.
The 26-year-old, capped 26 times since his debut in 2019, took just 19 minutes of the recent World Cup – a late substitute appearance in Switzerland’s last-32 win over Algeria – but insists this is not a sulk about selection.
On Thursday, Okafor went public with his decision in a stark Instagram statement that laid bare his frustration with the current regime.
"My decision has nothing to do with my playing time," he wrote. "Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.
"When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply.
"In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager."
The message leaves little room for interpretation: Okafor will not return while Yakin is in the dugout.
The Swiss FA confirmed it had been formally informed of his stance on Thursday. A spokesperson told Reuters: "We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club."
For Switzerland, it is a notable rupture with a player still in his prime and now playing in the Championship with Leeds after an £18m move from AC Milan in August 2025. For Okafor, it is a calculated sacrifice of his international future, at least in the short term.
Yakin, who has led the national team since August 2021, now faces the task of steering Switzerland into a new Nations League campaign under the shadow of a public fallout with one of his forwards.
Switzerland travel to North Macedonia on 26 September for their opening match of the 2026-27 Nations League. Okafor will not be on the plane – and, on his terms, not again under this manager.
