Nicolo Tresoldi: Germany's U21 Star at a Crossroads

Nicolo Tresoldi is already a key figure for Germany’s U21s. Whether he stays German at senior level is a question he still refuses to answer.

The Club Brugge forward has 24 caps for Germany’s U21 side, yet stands at a crossroads between the country that developed him and the nation of his birth, Italy. For now, he’s chosen not to choose.

“This is not a question that needs to be asked of me, but I have spoken to him and he said that he still can't make a decision,” Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo told Kicker.

The uncertainty hangs over Tresoldi’s future, but not over his present.

Because for the moment, the 22-year-old is staying put with Germany’s U21s.

“And that is a great sign for us,” Di Salvo added, relieved to have his striker committed for the next stretch, even if the long-term picture remains blurred.

Di Salvo framed Tresoldi’s dilemma as a symbol of modern football.

“I think the world has changed. 20 or 30 years ago, players didn't have to make these decisions at all,” he said.

The landscape is different now, with talent often belonging to more than one flag.

“The world has become more global, and many players have the opportunity to play for a second or even a third country. If they need time, you have to give them that time.”

Tresoldi’s story explains the tug-of-war. Born in Cagliari, he is the son of an Italian father and an Argentine mother of Italian descent. At 13, he left Italy with his family for Germany, joined Hannover 96, and later secured German citizenship.

Two nations, one rising forward, and a decision that could shape both their futures. For now, Germany still has him. Italy will keep watching.
