Nico O’Reilly Named PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year

Nico O’Reilly has been hailed as a “shining example” after the Manchester City full-back was named PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old’s rise has mirrored City’s dominance in the youth landscape. He delivered when it mattered most last season, scoring twice in the Carabao Cup final to turn the showpiece into his own stage, then adding an FA Cup winner’s medal to an already bulging breakthrough campaign. On the international front, he also played his part in helping England secure third place at the World Cup.

The setting for his latest honour was Manchester’s Opera House, a fitting backdrop for a player who has grown up under the spotlight of City’s academy. His win continues a remarkable pattern: five of the last six winners of this award have come through City’s youth system, with O’Reilly following Phil Foden (twice), Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

“Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy,” said academy director Thomas Krucken, reflecting the sense of ownership and pride inside the club.

“His success is testament to the hard work of the academy staff and coaches who guided him on his journey from our Under-9s all the way towards senior football.

“Nico is an inspiration to everyone at the academy. He is a shining example of how to approach the world of football and be successful. We are all really proud of him and want to send our best wishes to him and his family.

“Having five of the past six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award from our academy is an extraordinary achievement for us.”

From Under-9 hopeful to PFA standard-bearer, O’Reilly now carries a weighty mantle: proof that City’s pathway is not just functioning, but flourishing.
