Nico Gonzalez Available for Transfer as Newcastle Pursue £52m Midfielder
Manchester City have told Nico Gonzalez he can leave before the window shuts – even as some of his teammates try to convince him to stay.
Newcastle United have already moved into position. Desperate to reinforce their midfield after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies have opened talks over a deal for the 24-year-old, holding what have been described as “exploratory conversations”, according to The Athletic.
City’s stance is clear. Gonzalez, a £52 million signing from FC Porto in January last year, is available. Game time has been scarce under Pep Guardiola, with Rodri and Mateo Kovacic preferred throughout last season, and little in pre-season has suggested that hierarchy is about to change.
The picture has sharpened in recent days. The Premier League champions have brought in Elliot Anderson and are in advanced talks with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, pushing Gonzalez closer to the exit door. Internally, he has been told he can move on.
Newcastle see the opportunity. Gonzalez is one of three midfielders on their shortlist, but the Spaniard is understood to be the leading target at this stage. Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope reports that Gonzalez is “open” to joining Newcastle, even as some City players have urged him to reconsider and fight for his place.
Just a few weeks ago, the story sounded very different.
Speaking after a friendly win over K-League All Stars in South Korea at the start of the month, Gonzalez insisted he was content with his situation.
“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here,” he said. “I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position.
“That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”
The arrival of Enzo Maresca as manager had given some around the club hope that Gonzalez might be handed a fresh start. Yet the Community Shield offered a blunt reality check: Kovacic again ahead of him in the pecking order, the pathway to regular minutes still blocked.
Now, with the clock ticking on the window and Newcastle pushing, Gonzalez stands at a crossroads – stay and scrap for minutes in one of the most competitive midfields in Europe, or take the leading role on offer in a rebuilt engine room at St James’ Park.
