Nico Elvedi Shines in Leeds United Debut
Nico Elvedi walked out for his first Leeds United appearance with 11 years of Borussia Monchengladbach history behind him and a Carabao Cup tie in front of him. Ninety intense minutes later, he walked away with a win, a place in the next round, and the feeling that this new chapter might just suit him.
The summer signing made his debut in the second-round victory over Nottingham Forest and came off the pitch sounding both satisfied and hungry for more.
"It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage," Elvedi said, reflecting on a night that tested Leeds’ resilience as much as their quality.
The game handed him a familiar kind of challenge: a physical, old-fashioned battle with Chris Wood. No easing in. No gentle introduction.
"My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy. I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well," he explained. "There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK."
That mix of honesty and ambition fits the mood at Leeds. The club have brought him in for his experience and composure, and he has walked into a dressing room he already feels part of.
"I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players."
Behind that enthusiasm sits a major personal decision. Leaving Borussia Monchengladbach after more than a decade was not a routine transfer, it was a wrench.
"It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here."
One long spell in Germany closed, another story beginning in England, and a debut already marked by a cup win and a bruising duel with a seasoned Premier League striker. Elvedi has arrived; now the question is how far he can take this Leeds side in the months ahead.
