Newcastle United’s long search for a new midfield anchor is edging toward a decisive moment, with talks for Manchester City’s Nico González accelerating as the Sept. 1 deadline looms.
For weeks, the club has been trawling the market for a successor to Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali. The first serious movement came on Tuesday, when The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that Newcastle had opened negotiations with City over González. Soon after, Fabrizio Romano reported that City were “quite open” to letting the 24-year-old leave.
That openness has now hardened into something far more concrete.
Verbal agreement in place
According to Dutchie Bowen, Newcastle and City have reached a verbal agreement on a fee: £40 million up front, with a further £5 million in potential bonuses. The package, roughly €46 million plus €6 million in add-ons, would represent a significant investment in a player who has struggled to break into City’s starting XI.
With the clubs broadly aligned on the numbers, Newcastle have turned their attention to the player himself. Bowen reports that the Magpies are already negotiating personal terms with González.
“Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City for Nico González,” Bowen reported. “Fee £40m + £5m bonuses. NUFC negotiating personal terms W/ 24yo. Deal depends if both parties can reach an agreement.”
If that framework holds, Newcastle finally have a clear path to closing the deal quickly. City, for their part, have already told González he is free to explore options away from the Etihad, a clear signal that his future lies elsewhere.
Real Madrid enter the rumor mill
Just as the move seemed to be gathering pace, a familiar name appeared on the horizon.
CaughtOffside reported that Real Madrid have added González to a midfield shortlist after failing in their attempt to sign Rodri, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton also under consideration. The outlet claimed that the Spaniard has “firmly” entered the spotlight at the Bernabéu, while Newcastle are also in the race.

Right now, it feels more like background chatter than a fully formed threat.
Newcastle in pole position
Given Newcastle’s reported verbal agreement with City, the sudden mention of Madrid may suit those keen to nudge up the fee or strengthen González’s hand over wages. It could just as easily be leverage as it is genuine late competition.
The final obstacle is the player’s own decision. Yet with City making it clear he faces another season on the bench, the equation looks simple. A former La Masia prodigy stuck on the fringes at the Etihad, or a central role in a rebuilt Newcastle midfield under Matthias Jaissle?
At St James’ Park, González would not be a rotation option. He would be expected to walk straight into the XI and help define the next phase of the project.
Newcastle have chased a new midfield centerpiece all summer. Now the question is no longer whether they can find one, but whether they can push this deal over the line before the clock runs out.
