Newcastle United Eye Geny Catamo for January Transfer
Newcastle United are already looking beyond a youth-driven summer and into a far more competitive January, with Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo emerging as a serious name on their radar.
The recruitment team at St James’ Park spent the last window prioritising younger signings with scope to grow. That strategy hasn’t changed, but the profile of target is edging upwards – and Catamo, at 25, sits right in that sweet spot between potential and end product.
Catamo catches the eye
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have stepped up their scouting of the Mozambique international in recent weeks, as clubs across Europe begin to shape their winter plans. The Magpies are not alone.
Bailey reports that Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all checked on Catamo, while Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on his situation. The competition is real, and it is growing.
Catamo has done his part to fuel the interest. He has started the season sharply for Sporting, with two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers, combined with his age and versatility out wide, have pushed him firmly into the Premier League conversation.
A familiar pursuit – and a firm stance
Newcastle are not arriving late to this story. Bailey notes that several clubs, including Premier League sides, made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer. They didn’t get far, but they didn’t walk away either. The monitoring has continued as his form has picked up.
The biggest obstacle is clear: Sporting’s position.
Sunderland found that out the hard way. The Black Cats made Catamo their top target in the summer window, only to hit a brick wall when negotiations began. Sporting refused to entertain a discount and insisted any buyer would need to trigger the winger’s €60 million (£51 million) release clause in full. Sunderland balked at that figure and stepped back.
Even so, their interest has not disappeared. Sunderland remain in the frame, but the landscape has shifted. Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa now represent a powerful block of Premier League competition circling the same player.
England calling?
One thing tilts the scales slightly towards those English clubs: Catamo’s own ambition.
Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and is attracted by the idea of testing himself in England. For Newcastle and their rivals, that mindset matters. It doesn’t lower the fee, but it can smooth everything else.
Right now, though, there is no suggestion that Newcastle have made a bid or opened formal talks with Sporting. The situation remains in the scouting and assessment phase. The key question hangs over Lisbon: will Sporting soften their stance on the €60 million clause when January arrives?
If they don’t, any club – Newcastle included – will have to decide whether a £51 million outlay on Catamo fits their plans or whether that money is better spent elsewhere in a window that could shape the second half of the season.
