Newcastle Targets Barcelona’s Guille Fernández for Youth Development
Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing, and Barcelona’s La Masia is the latest talent pool in their sights.

Another teenager on the radar
Newcastle have already moved decisively for 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster the midfield. Now, the conveyor belt could bring in another teenager.
Reports on Wednesday linked the club with a move for 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, with a deal described as close. And the recruitment team appears to be working in parallel on yet another youthful addition.
According to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle are closing in on 18-year-old Guille Fernández from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández reported. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
That line alone underlines the level of interest. Newcastle are not alone at the table.
La Masia product with Spain pedigree
Guille Fernández has yet to make his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed through the academy ranks and is already part of the club’s reserve setup. Within Spain, he is well regarded: the midfielder is a Spain Under-19 international and is comfortable across multiple central roles.
He currently sits on Barcelona’s first-team roster, at least on paper, but the path to real minutes at the Catalan club is steep. The competition in midfield is fierce, and the club’s strategy with young assets has become increasingly pragmatic.
Heading into the 2027–27 season, Fernández holds a market value of €3 million. That figure gives a rough sense of how he is viewed in the wider market, but it may not tell the whole story if a bidding war develops.
Barcelona want a string attached
Fernández’s reporting makes one thing clear: Barcelona do not want a clean break.
The club intends to keep some form of control over Guille Fernández’s long-term future, likely through a buy-back clause written into any agreement. It is a familiar template for La Masia exports in recent years, allowing Barcelona to cash in now while preserving the right to bring a player back if he blossoms elsewhere.
No specific transfer fee has been reported, and there are no concrete details yet on the structure or size of any buy-back. What is clear is that the presence of other bidders could nudge the price higher, both for the initial acquisition and potentially for any future option.
Even so, the claim that Fernández is “close to Newcastle” points towards another step in the club’s youth-driven rebuild.
Youth project meets immediate pressure
Newcastle’s strategy is not purely about tomorrow. While they chase teenagers, the recruitment team is also working on a very different type of signing: a midfielder ready to walk straight into the starting XI.
With Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes gone and their quality stripped out of the middle of the pitch, Jaissle needs an instant solution. One target fits that profile and still ties back to the La Masia theme: Man City’s Nico Gonzalez, another graduate of Barcelona’s academy, is being pursued as a more experienced option capable of replacing some of that lost influence right away.
So the picture is layered. On one side, Guille Fernández, Steur, Bamba, Diabate – a cluster of teenagers meant to define the next cycle. On the other, a move for someone like Nico Gonzalez to steady the present.
Newcastle are betting heavily that they can do both at once. The question now is whether this bold blend of long-term investment and short-term urgency will be enough to keep pace at the top end of the Premier League, or whether the demand for instant success will force an even bigger swing on established stars before this window slams shut.
