Napoli Sign Benoit Badiashile on Loan from Chelsea

Napoli have moved decisively to strengthen their defence, sealing a deal for Chelsea centre-back Benoit Badiashile on the eve of their Serie A kick-off.

The club confirmed on Saturday that the 25-year-old Frenchman arrives from Stamford Bridge on an initial loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. It is a significant statement from the Italian side, who have been looking to add stature and composure to their backline.

In a note published on their official channels, Napoli detailed the agreement: they have acquired “the sporting rights to the player Benoit Badiashile from Chelsea on a temporary basis with a permanent option.” With that, Badiashile’s stop-start chapter in London pauses, at the very least.

His time at Chelsea never fully ignited. Last season he made 16 appearances in all competitions, battling injuries and constant managerial upheaval as he tried to secure a regular starting place. The talent was clear; the continuity never came.

The structure of this move gives all parties something to play for. According to Sky Sport transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli will pay a €3 million loan fee for the season. The option to buy is set at €20 million, a figure that would allow Chelsea to recover a sizeable slice of the €37 million they paid Monaco in January 2023 if Napoli decide he is worth a long-term bet.

Not everyone agrees on the exact numbers. Reports in Italy this week suggested the buy option could climb as high as €27 million once add-ons and bonuses are factored in. The core, though, remains the same: a relatively low-risk loan now, with the potential for a substantial permanent deal next summer.

For Chelsea, Badiashile’s exit continues a summer of heavy traffic through the departure lounge. He follows Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos to Manchester United, and Trevoh Chalobah to Como, as the club trims and reshapes a bloated squad.

For Napoli, his arrival is another key piece in a quietly busy window. Badiashile becomes their second major first-team signing after the capture of Costantino Favasuli from US Catanzaro earlier in the week, adding both pedigree and depth as they prepare for another demanding campaign.

Badiashile’s résumé is already substantial for a 25-year-old defender. Before leaving Monaco, he had clocked up 135 competitive appearances in Ligue 1 and Europe, building a reputation as a left-footed centre-back with presence and poise. His Chelsea spell brought Premier League exposure, with 42 league outings across his time in England, even if the turbulence at the club often overshadowed individual performances.

True to form, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis made sure he had the first word. On X, he posted a simple message — “Benvenuto Benoit” — just before the club’s formal announcement dropped. A welcome, and a challenge.

Napoli now head into their opening Serie A fixture away to Genoa with a high-profile defensive reinforcement through the door and a clear option to keep him. The question is no longer whether Badiashile will get his reset.

It is what he does with it in Italy.
