Mohamed Salah's Determined Response at Trabzonspor After Europa League Exit
Mohamed Salah has moved quickly to steady the ship at Trabzonspor after a brutal Europa League exit and a dramatic, short-lived resignation from his manager.
The 34-year-old, who left Liverpool in the summer to start a new chapter in Turkey, watched his new side collapse 4-0 against Ferencvaros on Thursday night. He lasted 64 minutes before being substituted, unable to drag Trabzonspor back into a tie that ran away from them.
The defeat dumped the Super Lig club out of the Europa League and into the Conference League. The fallout was immediate.
Tekke quits… then stays
In the post-match press conference, head coach Fatih Tekke stunned reporters by announcing he was resigning.
"I think I have the right to punish myself in this way," he said, taking full responsibility after the heavy loss.
The club hierarchy refused to let him walk away. Within hours, Trabzonspor released a statement confirming they had rejected his resignation.
"Fatih Tekke has decided to resign due to the emotional intensity caused by the defeat following the Ferencvaros match," the statement read.
"As the Trabzonspor Board of Directors, Fatih Tekke's resignation decision has not been accepted. Fatih Tekke continues in his role and will be at the helm of our team in the Amedspor match we will play in the league."
So the coach stays. The project, at least officially, remains intact. That left Salah to address the mood around the club.
Salah’s rallying cry
With frustration swirling among supporters after a bruising European night, Salah took to social media platform X to send a clear message: he is not going anywhere, and neither is his ambition.
"Nothing in my career ever came easy," he wrote. "Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies.
"Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan to me."
It was a defiant response from a player who arrived to huge fanfare after terminating his Liverpool contract at the end of last season. Trabzonspor beat off competition for his signature following the World Cup, handing him a two-year deal and the status of marquee signing.
When he was unveiled, Salah spoke about the intensity of the welcome and his hunger to repay it.
"The last couple of days, it's an experience I have never had in my life," he said at the time. "I'm here to win. I want to win something with this club because you guys have showed me so much love, and I really, really appreciate that."
The love is still there. The pressure now is to match it with results, starting with that Amedspor game and a response that shows this European humiliation is a turning point, not a warning sign.
