Mohamed Salah Celebrates Birth of Son Leil in Liverpool

Mohamed Salah is back in Liverpool for the most personal of reasons – the birth of his first son.

The former Anfield superstar, who ended his long stay with the club in the summer, has returned to the city where his wife Magi delivered their third child. The boy’s name, revealed by Salah’s sister Rabab on social media, is Leil – an Arabic name meaning “night”.

A new arrival, a familiar city

Salah, now 34 and playing his football in Turkey with Trabzonspor, had officially closed the Liverpool chapter when his contract was terminated a year early. Yet it was in the north west of England, the place his family came to call home, that the couple welcomed their son.

Rabab’s post confirmed the news and the name, as messages of congratulations began to pour in from fans across the world.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan also spoke about the new arrivals in his squad’s dressing room, revealing that Salah was not the only player celebrating. Speaking to 61saat, he said:

"After the (Amed SK) match, I travelled abroad with Salah and Andre Onana. Both of them had new children, Onana had twins and Salah a baby boy. I congratulate their families and their wives.”

From Nagrig to Liverpool to Trabzon

Salah’s journey has always had his family at its core. He and Magi, his childhood sweetheart, grew up together in Nagrig before she later trained as a biotechnician. The pair married in 2013.

Their first daughter, Makka, arrived in 2014, followed by Kayan in 2020. For almost a decade, the family built their lives in Liverpool, settling into the city as Salah became one of the Premier League’s defining figures.

They had expected to stay even longer. Salah signed a two-year deal in 2025, only for club and player to agree to rip it up 12 months early. The affection, though, never left.

“They feel at home [here]. They were very happy, [wife] Magi and the kids, they were very happy that we're staying another two years. It feels like home so everyone was happy,” Salah said previously about life on Merseyside.

Those words ring even louder now, with his son born in the city they never quite stopped calling home.

Turbulent start in Turkey

While his family grows, Salah’s new football chapter in Turkey has already thrown up early turbulence. Trabzonspor have parted company with head coach Fatih Tekke after a bruising 5-0 aggregate defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League play-offs.

The heavy loss triggered questions about the club’s direction, but Salah moved quickly to address the setback with a statement on social media that underlined his mindset.

"Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies. Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan to me."

The message was clear: no retreat, no excuses.

Between the joy of Leil’s arrival and the sting of European elimination, Salah stands at another crossroads in a career defined by resilience. A new baby boy in Liverpool, a new fight in Trabzon – and the same relentless drive to turn difficult nights into something worth lifting.
