Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers as New Senior Boss
Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers, with the county’s management committee putting his name forward as the next senior boss.
The former Longford manager, who left that role earlier this month, will be presented for ratification at September’s county board meeting. If approved, he will take over on a three-year term, signalling a fresh chapter for the Faithful County after another period of upheaval on the sideline.
Solan will not be coming in alone. His backroom team is already taking shape, and it carries both experience and local clout. Renowned coach Joe Keane – who has previously worked with Mayo, Sligo and Longford – is set to join him, bringing a deep knowledge of the inter-county game and modern coaching demands.
Alongside Keane will be Offaly great Nigel Dunne, a figure who has already delivered for the county’s next generation. Dunne guided the Offaly minors to a long-awaited Leinster title in 2025, ending a 35-year drought at that grade and injecting real optimism into the county’s future. His presence links the senior setup directly to that emerging talent.
Solan’s own résumé is steeped in inter-county experience. Before his stint with Longford, he managed the Mayo Under-21s and worked as part of Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, building a reputation as a modern, organised operator with a strong track record in player development.
He steps into the vacancy created by the departure of joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly, who both stepped down last month. Harte had initially weighed up staying on for another season after joining Kelly on the line in 2024, with Kelly already in place from the previous year, but the pair ultimately chose to walk away.
Looking Ahead
Now Offaly stand on the brink of a new era. If county delegates give their approval in September, Solan and his team will be handed the task of turning promise into progress.
