Mike Dean Faces Backlash Over Referee 'Games' in Premier League
Mike Dean has landed himself at the centre of a storm after admitting he used to play “games” and “joke about” to keep himself entertained while refereeing Premier League fixtures.
The 58-year-old, who took charge of 553 Premier League matches across more than two decades, made the revelations on the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast, and the reaction has been swift – and furious.
‘See how long we can go without blowing the whistle’
Speaking to former England striker Jamie Vardy, Dean described how he would set himself challenges during games, including seeing how long he could go without using his whistle.
“There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh,” Dean said. “We used to say, something like ‘we’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle’.”
“Done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously. Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go.”
He then detailed another self-imposed test that he claims he tried during top-flight matches.
“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave. That was just me joking about.
“But the lads used to be on the line saying ‘you can’t’. I said ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got (to) about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”
Dean retired from on-field refereeing in 2022 and had a brief spell working as a VAR assistant.
Bemusement inside officiating circles
Inside the refereeing community, the reaction has been one of disbelief rather than amusement. It is understood Dean’s claims have been met with bemusement by those currently involved in officiating, with some pointing out the lack of concrete detail around the specific matches he is referring to.
Refereeing in England is now overseen by Pro Ref – the rebranded body formerly known as Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The organisation has been approached for comment on Dean’s remarks.
‘You’re not funny, Mike Dean’
Outside the refereeing bubble, the anger has been less restrained.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor did not hold back when reacting on talkSPORT, accusing Dean of treating the Premier League like a playground.
“He’s trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up,” Agbonlahor said.
“He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?
“It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in’. One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat.”
At a time when referees are under more scrutiny than ever and trust in officiating is a live issue across the game, Dean’s attempt at light-hearted storytelling has instead reopened an uncomfortable question: what exactly should players and fans expect from those in charge of the biggest matches in English football?
