Michael Duffy's Stoppage-Time Winner Lifts Derry City Over Shelbourne
Michael Duffy smashed in a stoppage‑time winner at Tolka Park to drag Derry City above Shelbourne and into fifth in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division – with almost the last kick of a game that had been drifting towards oblivion.
For 90 minutes, it looked like a stalemate that suited nobody chasing Europe. Then the Derry captain arrived, right on cue.
Three minutes into added time, James Clarke found space on the left and picked out Duffy in the box. The skipper didn’t hesitate, lashing his finish beyond Eddie Beach as the Shelbourne keeper was finally beaten after an outstanding night’s work.
Up to that point, the woodwork and Beach had kept Derry out.
The visitors had carved out the better chances in a tight, cagey contest. Substitute Liam Boyce came closest before the late drama, showing sharp feet on the edge of the area with ten minutes left and cracking a shot off the crossbar, Beach rooted as Tolka gasped.
Shelbourne had started with purpose, going long and early to Mipo Odubeko, while Derry tried to knit their way out from the back. The first real opening fell to the hosts when Daniel Kelly slipped James Norris in on the overlap, but the full-back’s low drive was smothered by Cameron Dummigan.
From the resulting corner, Odhrán Casey climbed highest and met the delivery cleanly, only to head onto the top of the net rather than into it.
That warning stirred Derry. Dummigan cut in from the right and let fly from 25 yards, though his effort sailed over. Moments later, Ellis Chapman – back at his former club – stepped up from midfield and let one go from distance. Tyler Smith flicked the shot goalwards and Beach had to spring full stretch to tip over.
The Candystripes began to dictate. Neat interplay through the middle freed Duffy at the edge of the area, but he dragged his shot wide and thumped the turf in frustration. Their pressure continued, Duffy this time slipping in Darragh Burns eight yards out, only for Norris to scramble back and block.
Shelbourne, though, still carried a threat. Tom Norcott, on loan from Reading, had to react sharply to beat away a long-range effort from Ali Coote, with Norris again lurking. Dummigan bailed his side out, throwing himself in front of the follow-up that looked destined for the net.
The best chance of the half fell Derry’s way. Norris, harried by Burns, under-hit a backpass and Smith pounced, racing clear one-on-one. He picked his spot low towards the corner, but Beach read it brilliantly and palmed the ball behind.
The pattern barely shifted after the break. Both sides showed intent, but Derry turned territory into chances.
Brandon Fleming worked half a yard on the left and whipped a low ball into the area. Adam O’Reilly met it first time, only to fire straight at Beach, who held firm again.
Shelbourne almost nicked one from a set piece as Casey hooked Kerr McInroy’s corner just wide, appealing in vain for a shirt pull as the referee waved play on.
Ruaidhrí Higgins turned to his bench and got instant energy. Kevin Dos Santos injected pace down the flank with just under 20 minutes left and immediately squared for fellow substitute Clarke, whose drilled strike stung Beach’s hands.
Derry sensed the opening. Boyce rattled the bar. O’Reilly then surged into the box and whipped a ball right across the face of goal, but no blue shirt gambled.
It felt like the chance had gone. It hadn’t.
Deep into stoppage time, Clarke again found joy on the left, this time picking out Duffy in space. One touch, one ruthless finish. A flat, anxious night at Tolka Park flipped in an instant.
